SERVING
OTHERS
Service Saturdays
aturdays are generally meant to be restful days
for students, where work takes a backseat to
relaxation. However, some students prefer to
spend a weekend in service by signing up for Service
Saturdays and helping around the Abilene area.
The Service Action Leadership Team (SALT) sets
up approximately eight sites around the community
for which students may sign up, and one Saturday
each month they help the elderly, spend time with
children or otherwise serve the Abilene area for a few
hours.
Kristy Perdue, sophomore international studies
major from Midlothian, is a member of SALT and also
actively participates in Service Saturday.
"We had the very first Service Saturday in
September of 2000," Perdue said. "It is an awesome
day that is starting to take off."
With about 100-150 students signing up every
month and social clubs getting in on the action,
Service Saturdays will be around for a long time as
ACU tradition.
Bradley Hardin, freshman biology major from
Abilene, signed up this year to assist at a house in the
area.
"We helped out around the house, cleaned the
garage, worked on the flowerbed, and did other
things that need to be done," Hardin said.
This kind of project is common for Service Saturdays,
where the students may help out at the houses
of elderly or disabled and perform tasks that would
otherwise be too difficult.
"I think it's a good way to give help to people in
need," Hardin said. "If you're into helping people, itmakes it easy since ACU organizes it."
Sign-ups are found the week before the Saturday
is held in the ticket windows, and any questions can
be answered in the Volunteer and Service-Learning

Galaxy member Byron Mays, junior English major from Fritch,
announces the overall winner of the 18th annual Kirk Goodwin Run,
which raises money for families struggling to pay for medical bills.
