The information in brackets was inserted to help clarify some of the information.
The front part of the old Bible has come off and each time it is handled more
pages come out. My grandmother gave it to me shortly before her death, and she
told me that my great grandfather, Mr. J. R. Black purchased it shortly after he
and my great Grandmother were married. Mrs. Elizabeth J. Smith Black was first
married in 1877 to Mr. A. J. Bullington and they had three small children and
moved to Athens, Texas. In 1882, her husband and all three children took measles
and died within one week, they were buried in Athens, and Grandma came back
to her mother's near Omen. She went to visit one of her sisters who lived near
the Blacks and met J. R. who was 34 and had never married, after a short courtship
they were married and moved on to land he had inherited from his father and
built a home where they lived until Grandma became very ill and they came to
live with my grandmother. ---Keneth R. Fortner
