In behalf of the Armstrong Co-
unty 4-H Clubs, thanks a million
to each and every one of you
who helped make this year's an-
nual 4-H Farm Machinery Auc-
tion Sale a success. Although we
could note the economic effects
of the dry weather, as indicated
b^v occasional slowness in bidding
* for the larger items, we still feel
we wound up with another suc-
cessful sale.
Our thanks especially to Roy
J. Milhoan, Walter T. McDade
and Jimmy Randies, who came
from Wildorado to donate their
auctioneering services.
Harold Nave, John Reck and
Lloyd Oreen assembled the winch-
truck, and Chester Butler operat-
ed it to load heavy items at the
sale. Without the use of this e-
quipment, courtesy of the county,
some of us would have wound
up with worse than sore backs.
Serving as clerks were Doc
Minkley, Louis Thomas and Ches-
ter Butler. Tony Chauveaux, Don
Minkley, Stacy Ward, Mart Byrd,
Mike Chauveaux, Mickey Thomas
and Scott Boomer beat many a
set of tracks to the cashiers' desk,
serving as runners.
Operating the cashiers', office
were Mrs. Louis Thomas, Mrs.
Forrest Bennett, Mrs. Pat Bag-
well, Mrs. Bus Fithen and Mrs.
Emzy May.
The pics sold by the 4-H Club
girls at the concession stand were
donated by the Armstrong Coun-
ty Home Demonstration Council.
We especially appreciate the
kindness of Art Shaffer, Wingate
Farm Supply, for the use of his
building as both the cashiers' of-

Our publicity was given an add-
ed boost by the business men who
sponsored the full-page ad of our
handbill in last week's paper.
Space will not permit the ack-
nowledgment of everyone who
helped make this event possible,
but, again, thanks a million.
Weed control conference held
Several important items were
discussed at the 16th annual Weed
Control Conference, held last
Thursday at the experiment sta-
tion at Bushland. Of special in-
terest was the report given by
Doug Robinson on control of
woody plants on rangeland. Doug
is an old acquaintance of mine,
whose family I worked with while
serving as an assistant agent in
another county.
Joe Pafford started the program
off, by explaining a new research
project he is working with at the
station. This is in regard to mois-
ture loss due to weeds. With our
soil moisture so of fen in short
supply, this aspect of weed con-
trol should be of concern to far-
mers in this area.
Douglas Degge explained the
mechanics of forming a weed con-
trol district. A state law provides
for weed control districts in 33
counties all located in the Pan-
handle and immediate area south.
At the present time, only three of
the counties have formed dis-
■ tricts, and a fourth one is going
through the process of becoming
one.
4-H District Eliminations
Saturday will be the big day for
22 Armstrong County 4-H Club
members. The district elimina-
tions will be held at Canyon.
This year we have contestants
who will be competing in several
contests. These include rifle mar-
ksmanship, tractor operators, e-
lectricity, poultry, safety, share-
thc-fun, public speaking, and soil
water and range conservation and
management.
Let's all wish these club mem-
bers the best of luck as they
compete against county winners
from 21 other counties.
Wheat meetings
I hope every wheat producer in
this county has taken advantage
of the series of meetings current-
ly being conducted by the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service, to
explain the proposed 1964 Wheat
Program, on which a referendum
vote will be held May 21. If you
have not yet attended one of
these meetings (they are all iden-
tical), you still have an oppor-
tunity. One is being held at
Hereford today, and the last one
will be held at Perryton tomorrow.
Both meetings will begin at 10
a.m. The Hereford meeting will
be held at the community center.
Perryton's meeting will be held in
the high school auditorium.
The referendum vote is one of
the most important decisions that
a wheat grower has been required
to make in several years. For
this reason it is vitally important
that each producer be informed
as to the provisions of the pro-
gram.
Many meetings have been held
in this area by other agencies and
organizations. Remember, how-
ever, that your Agricultural Ex-
tension service has as its respon-
sibility the making available of
completely objective, unbiased in-
formation. These meetings have
not been designed to influence
any producer to vote yes or no,
but to provide the factual infor-
mation making it possible for you
to feel thaf your decision, wheth-
er "yes" or "no", is based on valid
facts.
I hope every wheat grnwer in
the county has attended or plans
to attend one of these meetings.
