Tht- Chat's Five Fearless Football Forecasters failed to establish much of
a peeking order in their first week of prognostication.
Four of the five posted 7-3 records. Only Tom Koch fell below the average
—he was 6-4
About all that the Fearless Five managed to do the first week was to be-
come the Fearless Four. Little Red retired in favor of Billy Ahrens, a former
Chat sports editor, who promised to improve on Little Red's nv'rd. However,
a look at Ahren's predictions for the week offers no support, for his ntatement.
The Fearless Few were unable to reach an agreement in their predictions
this week. There was no question of where the sentiment lay in the North
Texas-Louisville game, but the object is to pick what you think will happen,
not what you want to happen.

The I'niversity of Louisville Cardinals,
flying high with a 2-0 record, will help
North Texas open Missouri Valley Con-
ference play in Fouts Field Saturday
night at 7:30.
The Cards, who bested Drake and
Southern Illinois in their first two games
this fall, lead the league in ln>th passing
and rushing. Louisville averaged 22$)
pards passing and 204 yards rushing in
its two games.
WALLY OYLKR, the Cards' junior
quarterback, is the conference leader in
total offense. He teams with halfback
Herbie Phelps and fullback Jim Stallings
to give the Cards a balanced attack.
Phelps is averaging 5.8 yards per carry
ami Stallings 5.1.
Coach Rod Rust has wanted the Ea-
gles that Louisville will be tough. "This
is the best Louisville has looked in
years," Rust said this week. "They have
excellent balance and are deep in impres-
sive personnel."
THE CARDS also boast a rugged de-
fense. They allowed only six points in
their first two games. Their defensive
line is big and quick, and the defensive
backfield is solid.
But the heart of the Louisville defense
is linebackers Ed Harmon and John
Neidert, both All-America candidates.
Cardinal Head Coach Frank Camp calls
them the "best set of linebackers in col-
lege football."
The Eagles, who opened their season
last Saturday with an impressive 31-0
win over Drake, should be in good phys-
ical shape for the game. The only doubt-
ful starter is split end James Russell,
who missed last week's opener with a
pulled hamstring muscle. "James himself
will just have to feel his way along,"
Rust said. "I don't know how you pre-
dict when he'll be ready with that type
of muscle pull,"
Rl'ST WAS PLEASED with the open
ing win last week, but he feels his Ea-
gles will have to improve to handle
Louisville. "1 was encouraged," Rust
said. "We definitely have to get better
in a hurry, but we found some good
things in the Drake game."
He was particularly pleased with the
small number of assignment breakdowns
for a first game. "We missed some
blocks and tackles and dropped some
passes, but the players carried out their
assignments well," he said.
The Mean Green defensive unit, which
wound up as the best in the league after
the performance against Drake, should
get a sterner test Saturday night.
"Its alwu.VH nice to win; I just
ho|K' we can keep it up."
Thats how Louiaville's head
coach, Frank Camp, feels about
his team's clash with North Texas
Saturday niRht.
Camp doesn't see a pleasant
niKht in store for his Cardinals.
"We know North Texas has a good
ball club," he said Wednesday in
a telephone interview. "You all
were the best defensive team we
faced last season, and I know moHt
of those boys are back."
CAMP FIGURES his team will
have to throw the ball a little more
against the EaKle defense. "We
have tried to balance our running:
and passing, and have had pretty
Kood success in doing so the first
two Karnes," Camp said. "Rut if we
have to pass a little more Saturday,
we won't hesitate." They call the
Missouri Valley the passingest con-
ference in the nation," Camp added
with a lautfh, "and 1 see North
Texas is doinf? its share, too."
When Louisville does take to the
air, the man who will be dointf the
throwing is quarterback Wally Oy-
ler. Oyler, an All-MVC defensive
back last season, was moved to
quarterback in spring drills.
"He's had a couple of pretty good
games," Camp said. "We're satis-
fied with the way he's played."
The Louisville coach had praise
for his two linebackers, Ed Har-
mon and John Neidert. "They're
> trong tacklers and pretty quick,"
Camp said. "They're both seniors
and have played together for a
while and that helps too."
Camp also had praise for Ea-
gle tackle Joe Greene. "He's a good
one, no doubt about that. He was
as good as any lineman we saw
last year."
The Cardinals are also concerned
about the North Texas offense and
its pro type attack, ('amp said that
the Eagle passing attack looked
|K)t.ent against Drake, even though
split end James Russell didn't see
action. Camp added that his Cardi-
nals were preparing for the game
as if Russell would play.
Camp said the game was a tough
one to predict. "We're young, just
!ike you, and we don't know what
to expect," he said. "It's hard to
say if it will be a wide open game
or a low-scoring one. I'll tell you
one thing though — it should be
a real good ball game." He could
be right.
