Attend Convention
Miss Avis Lee McElvaney. daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer MeEl-
vany of Clarendon, will attend the
National Theta Sigma Phi con-
vention in Los Angeles, Aug. 18-20.
She will leave via TWA Tuesday.
Miss McElvany, who wa.s elected
president of Theta Sigma Phi, hon-
orary journalism sorority, at. the
University of Missouri this spring,
will represent her chapter at. the
business meetings and social Junc-
tions of the convention.

Art Exhibit To Be Held
At Rose Bowl This Week
Tomorrow an exhibition of paint-
ings by Glenn Cooper Henshaw,
world famous artist, will open in the
Rose Bowl, sponsored by the Junior
, Welfare League.
The exhibition will include a se-
ries of pastels, a medium in which
; Henshaw is a master. The paintings
were brought here by Miss Lorene
McClintock. formerly of Slaton, who,
1 for the past six months, has had
charge of the Barbizon-Plaza Art
Gallery in New York City.
Although Mr. Henshaw painted
; several creditable compositions in
years of study abroad, his finest
work has been done with the Amer-
j lean scene. Particularly out.stand-
jing are his studies of children and
; old folks—with whom he seems to
| have a particular sympathy, catch-
ing the animation of the one, the
wistfulness of the other.
He has been known as an "idealis-
tic realist," for his ability of spirit-
; ualizing his subjects, as though they
were dream pictures, atmospheric,
i imaginative.
He is well known In the field of
: portraiture, having painted John
Noble, famous artist., Edwin Mark-
ham. poet, and Percy McKaye. play-
wright.
The paintings will be on display
; at the tea room from 11 until 2
: o'clock all this week. The exhibit
i will close on Aug. 22.

It might have been the summer i
of 1B80 out at 3205 Polk Street, Fri-
day night when several hundred
friends of the Ben Blackwells and
the Wallace Hurds gathered during j
the early evening.
Strains of cowboy ballads greeted |
Ihe guests, and a camptire's merry
gleam cheered The chuck waron
dispensed cowboy lemonade and
gingerbread. And the entire garden
was lighted with saroles, a colorful
Spanish custom, in which lighted
candles aie set. inside paper sacks.
Stunts, and dancing on the lawn,
took up part of the evening, with
the bold, bad men of the West en-
tering the bronco busting contests
—astride stick horses—"Laramie
Luke" Lynch was declared champion
bronc, buster.

were garbed in the traditional west-
ern clothes, colorful bandanas, spurs,

The annual club tennis tourna-
ment for both men and women will
start Monday. All matches for the
men will be the best, two sets out

best two of three. Any member
can enter the singles, doubles or
| mixed doubles. Finals will be play-
| ed Sunday, Aug. 28.
Curry Smyth, who played in the
: Broadmore golf tournament at Cnlo-
1 rado Springs last week, brought
hack the prize for winn-ig the third
flight. Smyth shot a 73 on his
final 18 holes.

A I,abor Day barbecue is planned
John Snider will again prepare the
barbecue. There will be a caddy
derby, horse shoe pitching, driving
contest, and dancing.
At the beginning of the swim-
ming season, there were 58 stu-
dents enrolled under Bob Clark. Out
of this number, there are 2fi who
will receive medals and eight who
will receive cups.
To win a medal, the child must
start by ducking his head and
graduate up through a series of
swimming stunts until he is able
to swim back stroke, free style stroke
and Ihe breast stroke.

The marriage of Miss Mildred
Lytle of this citv, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. O. Lytle of Springfield
Mo„ and Ward Garrison, also of
fhis city, took place Wednesday
evening at the home of Rev. Walter
P. Jennings, in Plainview. Rev.
Jennings, pastor of the First Chris-
tian Church, read the ring cere-
mony.
The bride wore blue marquisette
with matching aaccessories and a
corsage of gardenias. She carried
the lace hankerchief carried by the
bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Isabel
Garrison, at her wedding.
Miss Ellen Blake wa.s maid ot
honor, ano Early Pettier of Lubbock
served as best man. Other guests
attending were: Mrs, Isabel Garri-
son of Lubbock. Mrs. Jennings, and
Miss Frances Eileen Martin.
Following the ceremony, the bri-
dal party went to Lubbock where
they served a wedding supper at the
home of the bridegroom's mother.

low and apricot garden flowers.
Centering the table was an at-
j tractive arrangement of Joanna Hill
and Talisman rases flanked with
apricot tapers. The tiered wedding
| cake carried out the apricot color
motif.
After a trip to points in New
Mexico and Colorado, Mr. and Mrs
j Garrison will be at home at 1016

Mr. Garrison, a graduate of Texas
Technological College, is sales man-
ager of the industrial division of the
Gates Rubber Co.

School, wa.s granted Master of
awc from Colorado Stat??
College at Greeley, Colo., yester-
day.
Miss Driskill is a member of Kap-
pa Delta Pi. national honorary ed-
ucation fraternity, and Phi Alpha
Theta. national honorary fraternity
in social studies.
After a week's vacation In the
mountains, Miss Driskill will return
to her home at 2209 Tyler Street.
Betty Rose Cradit. daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. L. V. Cradit, is expert ed to
i return today from Camp Carrizo, in
New Mexico, where she has spent,
the past two months. She left here
three months ago and spent a
month on the West Coast before
going to camp.
Mrs. J. E. Powell of Iola, Kan.,
Mrs. O. A Kennedy of Kansas City,
Mrs, Walter Woodside and daughter,
Betty, of Wichita, Kan., who haw
been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Gregg and family and Mrs, Ray-
mond Erhard, returned home Thui -
day. Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Kennedy
are Mrs. Gregg's aunts.
Miss M. Georgia Simms, first
grade teacher in the Summit school,

Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas.

Miss Mildred Baber. daughter of j
Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Baber, will be-
come the bride of Olin Huff, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Huff of Lock-
ney, Sunday morning at the hom^
of her parents. Rev. Ear! Craig of
the Church of Christ will read the
ceremony.
The bride will be dressed in pink
net, over blue taffeta, and will wear
a pink veil clasped with a silver tier-
ra. She will carry pink rosebuds
tied with a white ribbon, one stream-
er of which will be caught in the
white New Testament the bride
v.ill carry. She will be attended by
Miss Carrnel Lee Guinn of Here-
ford. Mr. Huff will be attended by
James Baker of Lubbock.
Miss Nettie Maxine Baber of
Wichita Falls will play the wedding
march. Mrs. Glen Dowlen will sing
preceding the ceremony which will
be read before an improvised altar
of gladioli and garden flowers.
Miss Baber is a graduate of the
Demonstration School and has at-
tended West Texas State College.
, Mr Huff is a graduate of lockney
High School and has attended Abi-
' lene Christian College and West
Texas State College. After a wed-
ding trip to New Mexico, they will
be at home here where they will
continue their college work.

The Henshaw Art Exhibit of New
York City, that is being shown all
over Texas, will be on display at
the Rose Bowl tea room from Aug.
