heart the highest interest of alibis vast north

That it will wield from the outset a poten
tial influence for development by a compre-
hensive exhibit of farm and ranch products and
a consequent appeal to home-seeking thous
ands no thinking citizen can doubt.

1 ' Davidson flatly 'denies that he has even the
remotest intention of retiring from the race
for Governor. " Which prompts the prediction
that the gentleman from Galveston will have
something really interesting to impart on ;in
jacmio Jay.
The fact that Anthony Drexel who is to
wed nineteen-year-old Marjorie Gould is only
twenty-two prompts the presumption that the
contracting parties are young enough to be
foqlish enough to actually be in love with each
other. '
The qua die rtiiiah boom of an-Easterner; for
the Democratic presidential nomination is
about to assume shape again. The Democratic
standard-bearer this time should be a South
erner or a Middle-Westerner. The East is too
close to Wall Street.
'Among the half-dozen rules laid down J ;-
(Speaker Cannon to make a high art o; i . ing
-was the following: "Learn to sine no mat-
Oer how miserably." We protest. The world
has too many vaudevillains now.
"Fort Worth is the model census city" as
serts the Star-rTelegram chestily. So much for
that'free marriage-license spirit which Tarrant
County officials- -have o markedly evidenced
In the past. ;
rrhe fertile area of the earth is estimated at1
omething over twepty-eight million square
miles. And it may be said in passing that the
Panhandle of Texas cuts considerable dimen-
sion in the computation.

languishly beautiful. But perhaps 'a brow n-
stone front or two will make up for the de-
ficiency. : - . . . '

for the nomination he should never no never

people can't sjand for everything.
Mr. Bryan vyill be the gutst of the Circum-
navigators' .Club in Chicago ncxt weckv He
will doubtless regale the membership with
tales of stormy voyages up Salt Creek.
".: Mayor Billard is strongly in favr of Sunday
ihows for Topcka. We shudder for "him even
though Aunt Carrie is out of the -Sunflower
State.
" It is stated that parrots in Mexico render in-
estimable service by giving advance warning
pf approaching earthquakes. It is a question
tohich calamity is worse.
The price of four-legged hogs continues
' to rise. Thctwo-legged breed that saunt-
ers round and cusses the town and coun-
try is not quoted ii the market reports.
Tulia Herald. ' '
And .the reason i clear. He has no market

The Times in reply to some unjust cen-
sure which it lias come in for during the
past few days because it refused to accept
for publication an article which might be
under the law construed as libelous in
character bel icves that it can-better af-
ford to stand for this censure rather than
involve itself. in a nasty suit. Again the
Times is not going to permit itself to be
used as a 'medium through which to pull
chestnuts from the fire that may not be
quite ripe for the pulling. It often sees
tiling:! going on which look suspicious
and which it . would like to denounce
through its columns as pure "fakes"'
"frauds." or "gum games" but under the
libel law of Texas reputable newspapers
will not indulge in such pastime unless it
knows beyond nj- question of doubt that
what it prints aidputs into circulation
are facts. With all 2ilue respect to its
learned critics it begs t say that while it
may have "cold feet" it also believes it
has a cool head. Wichita Falls Times.
The experience of the Times man in this re
gard has doubtless been shared bv cverv editor
inTexas. Newspaper.-i.like individuals are hedg
ed in by rcstrictly laws which whether just or
not must observed. No self-respecting editor
would willingly publish an untruth or malic-
iously endeavor to blast the reputation of any
individual. But under the present statutes it
isn't always entirely safe to publish certain
things that-are true. What is needed is a less'
drastic libel law in Texas. fc the iiewsnatier
is the guardian of the people's interests and
sTiould iot be . needlessly hampered.
I
A PRAIRIE MOOD.
AM grown stalwart in a singfe morn.
No more am I the pigmy think I was
The shrunk-soulcd weakling of a camping age
But loosed from that warped shell of littleness
Which was my Self's accustomed habitude
Full-pulsed steel-sinewed ruddy-hearted I
Grown broad and strong as these brave plains that stretch
Majestic vast to far infinitude's
Grown lofty-statured as the 'dim bint dome
Ofssky that scans the world. A Titan I!
The sun hath claimed my camradeship: this morn
While purple courtiers thronged his eastern gate
Ilc'spoke me fcllowly; my soul this night
Shall hold rapt converse with the tongu-ed spheres
And sit in council with the solemn stars.
Let come what chance another day may bring
To forge and shape new shackles for my soul.
I am grown strong to snap them: for this day
A creeping worldling walks erect a god!

COLONEL CLANSPUR SAYS:
Success is a curious maverick. While a favored few coax
it into their personal corrals with half-a-handful of manipula-
tion the -most pf us arc forced to go after it w;ith the lariat
of determination and clap our branding-irons on it instantcr
before some other chap spurs in and claims it.

' . SOUL HEALTH IS HAPPINESS.
Must men be made better? At present all they do is to
promise you a good life if you leading a bad life fight with
other men overthrow them by force and kill them in order to
attain better conditions of life that is. you are promised a
better life if you become worse than you are. That is a delus-
ion. There is only one way to attain a better life and that is
to become a better man.
