Blasts Political
Action Group
CHICAGO —(UP) — Former
rubber czar William Jeffers de
nonnee:; the CIO political action
committee a: unAmerican.
Jeffers, who is president of the
Union Pacific railroad, declare
that if the PAC succeeds in it',
aims, then —in his words - "th •
disintegration of American labor
unions starts and democracy be
gins to crumble."
He told the American
Bankers association conven-
tion lliis noon that he speaks
as a man "who has carried a
union curd all his life—and
si ill does."
Jeffers urged the convention
to liberaizo banking practices to
aid little business men in the
post-war period. He said new-
businesses will develop after
the war and will have to be
supported by private capital. He
also declared some old businesses
made sick bv the war, will have
to lie revived.
The railroad executive attack-
ed the government's anti trust
suit against the railroads. He
declared that Attorney-General
Biddle and his assistant, Wendell
Berge, as Jeffers put it, "have
secured the bulk of their rail-
road knowledge from riding in
pullman drawing rooms paid for
by taxpayers."
