women of New Mexico wear trains of

girl who ever got to be princess.
The Home Journal has an editorial on
'Pretty Fools" and only speaks of
half of them. It leaves the men out
entirely.
They say Dr. Mary Walker !s getting
extravagant. Shame on Mary? She'll
be trimming her pantaloons with old
lace next. -
' The champion time-vraitcr baa made
her appearance again. This time her
name is Rebecca Moore ; and the quilt
contains Z9tl7j pieces.
Eliza Aon Vance of Gallipolis has

Old laces with a historv are now con
siJered as a proper pait of art collec

York has a piece of lace which was
presented by the citv of Paris to the
unhappy Marie Antoinette. .

that they want all the good things for
tnemseivc? tuat they say women should
pe only wires and mothers and should

It is always the tenor who makes
trouble in the troupo. Usually it is the

Mrs. Julia Wuorfcl of Sheboygan

ami superior to anytmng ot the kind
yet invented. A system of dress cut
ting by which a woman can simply go
and be measured for her clothing as
gentlemen do and then have it made
nnd sent home without any more fuss
or trying on is the desideratum of this
age of women who work.
.The Hiuniin't Journal tells a rather
tough one on a man who would rather
. go to jiil than mind the babv. - Mrs
lUfferty applied to a police judge for
advice saying that she cquld support
the whole family if her husband would

riots at the time the Tories threw out
the reform bill in 1331-32. Alsrmed
by the fierce demonstratior s of the lo"-

Her grandson the worthy represent! -tive
of his grand sire but not of tbe
lovely Mary of 'The Dream" is now
the owner of Annerslej . A mile north
of Hucknall lies Xevstead the seat of
the Byron s a noble . estate which . I
suppose at a moderate calculation
would now sell for half ft million ster-
ling or as they say here ft half a nil-
lion of money for in England nothing
ii considered money that is not repre-
sented by the pound sterling.
Newstead as you know' was a noble
abbey of tbe middle ages but at tbe
time of the suppression of religious
bouses in the reipn of that pious
monarch. Henry III. of blessed
memory it passed into secular hands.
and became the abode of the Byrons
and so in due time of the young poet.
Here were held those orgies the read-
ing of which makes one shudder. Alt
the world knows that among other
bits of profanity practiced by the half-
wild young peer he dug up a skull cf
a former ablxt of the house hud it
mounted with silver and ued it as ft
drinking cup. In consequence it is
said tbe ghost ol tbe abbot visited tbe
"glimpses of the moon" for many a
year haunting especially the chamber
of his lordship ami that of bis page
adjoining. Bo firmly has this tradition
taken hold of the imagination of men
that few have been induced to sleep in
those chambers since the poet left them.
One sentimental traveler I believe a
strancer to fear aai-Mratit.on. wu
Emory inauiged by being allowed to
sleep in Byron's bed and Byron's room
and while recalling many "spooky"
lines of the poet be ascribed lus phan
tasy to the alliance of superstition with
the enthusiasm which directs the
thoughtsand faith of poets and stupidly
confessed himself to having slept undis
turbed "ihere was also a tradition
that so lopg as that skull remained
above ground no owner of Newstead
would ever have male issue to inherit
the estate. Byron died without a son
to take his home ami title; and the
same was ' true of its next owner.

enough even ir the starch does not
stick. To a cupful of starch. I vut one
hatr tcaspooniul of white sugar and
very little lard and cold water enouch
to wet it; then stir until tbe starch is
well dissolved. Pour boiling water on.
and keep stirring and let it cook
thoroughly. Uso it as hot as you can
bear your hands in it as it strikes in
better. The starch should not be too
thick or else the cloth will absorb it.
Sugar holds tho stillness better than
salt and gives a nicer gloss. l g. p.
Tbe. farmer who calculates to make
his living by ramus'; cannot afford to
lose a knowledge of the best methods
in practice and he cannot' hope to
learn tuete methods by his own exnc
rience even if that experience lie a rich
one. lie cannot afford to lose' tho
inaney which he certainly wilt by sell
ing his produce blindly without know
ing the conditions ol the market and
the things which affect its rise and fall.
If ho is successful without taking a
paper it is because he gets his informa-
tion from thoMi who do. -Any farmet
who may have taken the Statesman
for even a short period can recall the
numberless ways in which he may have
taken advantaga of hints and facts
noted in the various departments and
turned them to his profit.
To Feed Fowls. Fowls drink
water freely but they know just how
much they need and when they have
access to tbe fluid clean sweet and
fresh they imbibe no more than is
good for them. It is therefore uc-
necesiary to mix your dough too thia
and sloppy at the morning feeding.
Have the meal well scalded and feed
the mixture to the stock still' and dry
comparatively. This feed should gen-
erally be composed of both - corn and
rye meal with vegetables say one-
third each. - In our own practice we
have found this preferable both for
the birds and as an economical pro-
vision for tho old or the growing
stock. A little pepper occasionally in
this dough and always salt will im-
prove the mess.
Have System. System on the farm
is essential to permanent success.
Whatever branch of farming is selected
should be stuck to if only moderately
successful. A man is constantly learn-
ing in a business to which he gives
habitual attention' and this knowledge
is a part of his capital just as much as
the money invested in stock tools or
buildings. Tbe man who makes wheat
a leading crop by studying to lessen
the cost of production by experience
in the berft methods of preparing the
soil the use of manure and the cultiya'
tion of the crop can raise wheat cheap
er than his neighbor and though sell
mg it at the same price will realize
pro lit when they barely escape a loss.
On the other hand the man who
ever ready to abandon hi nsual prac
tice in order to follow something that
pays exceptionally wo'i at' the moment
such as sheep husbandry or hop-culture
when 'mutton wool or hops are
retching bihTrices is pietty sure to
lose money in the long run.
Science or Feeding. A correspon
dent ot the Jlamt j-armer tinder this
head says r After tho most thorough
experiments In the Koglish and German
stations it has. been found that the
proper ratio of albuminoids to carbo
hydrates is one to five for mature ani
mats and one to three and one-half for
young and growing ones. As grass and
hay is the staple food it was natural to

?oung animals wheat bran is a perfect
ood containing- the rato of 14 to 30 or
