King Alfonso's mamma has great

established. Some timo ago the Pope
was notified that the young king was
about to marry a daughter of the Duke
of Montpensier but now that is oil. It
appears that while Alfonso was appar-
ently seeking to espouse tho elder
princess Maria Christine he was en-
gaged in a correspondence with the
younger sister Marie de las Mercedes.
This double dealing could not long re-
maia secret and a family disturbance
instead of a marriage ensued.
r- When King Solomon heard the suit
before him of two women each claim-
ing possession of the same child as its
mother be decided that the babe
should be cut in twain and the even
fragments handed over to each. The
true parent cried out against the decis
ion that would sacrifice the life of the
child and preferred that it should be
von to the false claimint. Thore-
on the astuto ruler of Israel saw the
liguis 01 too case ami the second ver-
dict was in her favor. Now there was
a case in a Kansas court last week that
very much resembled tho ono told of
in the Biblo story but modern juris-
prudence would not allow of its being
adjusted iu the same way. Two woiiu.-u

Warded it to one who received it with-
out the slightest signs of direction.
Vhilo the other clung to it with tears
Xadd sobs and swooned awar when it
was forcibly taken from her. There it
a romantic history attached to tho liti-
gation. The woman who swooned is
the wife of the son of a man who is
Vj-aJorth half a million of dollars. He has
pother married son and a married
laughter and had offered to bequeath
lis entire property to the first of hischil-
f ren who should produce a male heir.
jTbis woman is said to have played an
!-dr3it game on her husband and on the
wealthy old gentleman by pretending
childbirth and showing an infaut that
he had bribed the other party to the
.suit to furnish ber. A disagreement
between the two women occasioned
the suit and developed the facts. As
the evidence stands it seems that the
putative mother was not weeping over
the loss of the baby but of the wreck
l her prospects for getting possession
of that half million.
The news of the death of Col. John
Forsyth for many years editor of the
Mobile Juyuter which is announced in
dispatch from Mobile was not un-
rxpected as bis health has failed
.ihin the last three years and his

the worst. Col. Forsyth was a native

Store . celebrated John Forsyth who
was successively Attorney Uvucral and
Governor of to via Representative

which we acquired the territory of

life. lie was appointed Minister to
Mexico by President Pierce in 1S50

He resolutely supported Douglas in
1SG0 nad since the war be has been
the leading editor of the South. His
gursn throughout all the difficulties

consistently wise aad conservative.
No man did more than he at the South
to hold (together the Democratic party
and to secure the triumph at critical
moments of calm counsels. His lost
wiU be seriously felt; but he lived to
see the victory of justice and law and
i to know that the land be loved was

WiiU'riNo Honsus. Prof. Wagner
in writing upon this suoject says:
Many think they arc doing finely and
are proud of their success in horse
t mini up by means of severe whipping
or otherwise arousing aad stimulating
the pasnoiis and then crushing the
will through which the resistance is
prompted. No mistake can be greater
than this and there is nothing that so
fully exhibits the ability judgment
and tkill of the real horsemen as the
care displayed in winning instead of
repelling the action of the mind. Al-
though it may be necessary to use the
whip sometimes it should always be
applied judiciously and great care
should bo taken not to arouse the
pastiions or excite the will to obsti
nacy. I he legitimate and proper use
of the whip is calculated to operate
from the sense of fear entirely. The
affectionate and better nature must be
appealed to in training a horse as well
asintraiuing a child. A reproof given
may be intended for the good of the
child but if only the passions are ex
cited the object is depraving and in
jurious. This is a vital principle and
can be disregarded in the management
of sensitive ami courageous horses at
the risk of spoiling them. I have
known many horses of a naturally gen'
tie character to be spoiled by whipping
ouce and one horse that was made
vicious by being struck with a whip
once while standing in bis stall.

The S.tnjiil &h nY or sacred banner
of the Miiuiun.dnu which the Sul-
tan Abdul-Hamid threatens to raise if
all other cITvrts to repel the Russian
invasion should prove ineffectual i
more commonly known as "the Stand-
ard of the Prophet." . It is said to
hive been originally of a white color
and was com poked of the turban of the
Koreish captured by Mohammed. A
black flag was however soon substi-
tuted in its place consisting of the
curtain that had hung before the door
of Ayesha the favorite wife of the
Prophet whose affection for her wt s
so strong that he was wont to say that
she would be the first of bis wives to
whom the gates of Paradise would be
open! The isinjak-SIieriT is regarded
by the Mohammedans as their most
sacred relic. It first came into the
posaession of the follower of Omar
the second Caliph id the Moslems and
generally regarded ai founder of the
Mohammedan power as from a mere
sect he raised it to the rank of a con-
queriog nation and left to bia succes-
sor an empire greater than that which
Alexander of Maccdon had made and
ruled in the olden time. It was this
Omar who astuinsd the title of ''Com-
mander of the Faithful" (Eniral-
wttfwratd) by which as the readers of
the "Arabian Nights' Entertainments"
will remember the Caliph Haroun al-
Raschid who was con'.emporary with
Charlemagne was always addressed.
The flg of the prophet passed from
the followers of Omar at Damascus
iuto "tlio hands of the conquering Ab-
basides in the middle of the eighth
century ; next into those of the Caiipbs
of Jiasdad and Kabira. It was brought
into Europe towards the close of the
sixteenth century by Sultan AmuraUt
HI with whom Queen Eliatbeth made
a treaty of commerce ia 1&79. It was
carried to Constantinople where cov-
ered with forty-two wrappings of silk
it was deposited in a chapel in the in-
terior of the Seraglio where it is per-
petually guarded by several Emirs
with constant prayers. If the Sultan
bould conclude to carry out bis threat.
nd unfurl this dread symbol to in
flame and madden "the Faithful"
throughout the East the war just be
gun would probably become the meat
cruel and relentless struggle of modern
times.
Take Care of Their Bralna.
Not long ago a student at Cornell
University who bad previously held
rank in bis class committed suicide
because his overstrained mental powers
failed him. More recently a youth cf
nineteen who took the first honors in
the Indianapolis High School last sum
mer likewise ended his existence with
his own hand. The brain that bad
carried him successfully through the
struggle for a foremost place in school
was exhausted with the enort and in
sanity ensued. And inasmuch as
catastrophes of this kind uiuslly hap
pen in groups we may expect to bear
of others like them in the course of a
short time.
The constant danger of overwork to
which American school children are
exposed either by their own ambition
or by want of judgment of their teach-
ers has often been pointed out. A
few years ago some remarks which
were made on the subject by the Hun
brought us numerous letters from par
ents detailing the length of time that
their boys and girls were compelled to
labor at their lessons in order to satisfy
tlie requirements of the institutions in
which they were getting their educa-
tion. In nearly every case no space
whatever was left for recreation and
exercise the hours out of school being
all devoted to study while those in
school were occupied with recitations.
Tha result of the exposure was a par
tial reform in the public schools of the
city but the evil is far from having
bjen eradicated. Within our acquaint
ance four fathers have recently under
medical advice withdrawn their sons
from school or college through appre
hension not of suicide indeed but of
serious injury to their brains and ner
vous systems from excessive mental
exertion.
Dr. Schliemann talked about Troy
and jMykeniu on April 11 to the edit
cition of Lord Houghton and the Brit
ish Archaeological Association lie re
minded them that the heroic towns
were very small. The first Trojan city
had no walls and It must have been
several times destroyed st as to form
twenty-feet-deep accumulation oi
rubbish. Homer mentions that Troy
had been destroyed by Heracles long
before the destruction by the Greeks
under Agamemnon and this legend
may refer to the destruction of this first
city. But identical with the Homeric
Troy which was captured by the Greek
army must be the city in succession
from the virgin soil because here are
the great tower the huge wallp whose
construction Homer attributes to JNep
tune and Apollo; here are the most
evident proofs of great wealth and
sudden destruction by the hand of the
enemy. 1 he extent of Troy as encom
passed by its walls is very small and
it cannot possibly have contained more
than 4000 or 5000 inhabitants; but
small as it is it is still larger than the
City ot Athens under the Kings which
was confined to the Acropolis until
Theseus added tho twelve surrounding
boroughs to it. The royal City of
Mykente was originally confined to its
very small Acropolis since only part
of the lower city bad a circuit wall
by far the larger part of the lower town
was merely a suburb. At the close of
his address Dr. Schliemann remarked
that as the Turkish government had
granted him a new firman for the con-
tinuation of bis excavation at Troy he
would soon leave London with Mrs.
Schliemann and finish what he had un
dertaken to do.
One of those pathetic tragedies that
touch the human mind deeper than the
inoBt vivid pictures drawn by the pens
of fckillf ul novelists has just culminated
in Ohio. About fifteen years ago there
appeared at a Shaker settlement in
that State a young mother with an in
fant dnugluer in her arms. The mother
kad been dcoerted by one of those cold
blooded villians who throw aside
woman's priceless love as the plaything
of a day. Ihe Shakers adopted the
mother and child. The mother and
daughter passed an uneventful life in
their quiet Quaker home until a few
months ago when the daughter bud
ding into womanhood developed
buoyancy of spirits that disturbed the
calm Shakers and caused a spirit of
uneasiness in the circles. This feeling
grew and the young Shaker evinced
a determination to shun the society of
the elder members and seek the com
paay of younger and more agreeable
companions. The elders informed the
mother that she must send her daughter
into the world. This the mother re
fused to do. They were then turned
adrift with a few dollars in their
pockets. After vainly looking for
situations where they could live to
gether mother and daughter engaged
a room in a hotel where they partook
of a deadly drug and both perished
The British ship Fleur de Lis lately
arrived at San Francisco reports a sin
gular experience on the voyage. When
oil Cape Horn the ship encountered
a school of whales which seems to
hwe resolved itself into an escort to
attend her on the remainder of her pas-
sage. The whales kept in close com
pany with the ship through this Ion
stretch of thousands of miles and did
not leave her until she arrived off the
port and put in for the shore when
they departed with a series of lively
flounders and an occasional spout to
assure the master that they were taking
in bumpers to bis health.
