The National Cancer
Institute has a national 24
hours toll-free information
number...1-800-638-6694.
For my own satisfaction I
telephoned to test the
strength of its availability
so that I could reliably
recommend this service to
Southwest Chinese Journal
readers.
)
Scott Smith, a science
writer for six years answer-
ed my call. Located in the
Washington, D.C. area, he
mans the telephone from 8:30
A.M. to 5 P.M. and gracious-
ly informed that there are
others who take charge dur-
ing these hours as well as
the xeo&lder^of the 24 hours...they include medical stu-
dents, nurses, and health professionals, a paid staff.
Although heart disease is the greatest killer in the U.S.,
it Is not as feared as cancer...for there is a tendency
for people to believe that there is a chance for heart
recovery.. .whereas for cancer...it spells dreed and death.
Yet early detection was the life saver for many who now
still live...they include...Shirley Temple Black...Marv-
ella Bayh, Senator Frank Church, Roy Wilkins, Opera's
Beverly Sills, Television's Arthur Godfrey, Betty Ford,
Happy Rockefeller, and countless others.
Cancer is no respecter of persons...it happens to the
poor and the rich, the ignorant and the intellect, the
obscure and the famous...it occurs in the fat and the thin
...the young and the elderly...there are no national
boundaries.
Cancer is a large group of diseases characterized by un-
controlled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the
spread is not controlled, it results in death. However,
many cancers can be cured if detected early and treated
promptly.
Leo Bugen, reached in Washington, D.C., who speaks Chinese,
revealed other federal funded toll free numbers:-
California...1-800-252-9066
Colorado...1-800-332-1850
Texas...1-800-392-2040
These latter three numbers are staffed by both volunteers
as well as professionals. Information not immediately
available can be researched & telephoned or sent by re-
turn mail to your address.
The American Cancer Society is concerned that th3 public

A sore that does not heal
U nusual bleeding or discharge
T hickening or lump in breast or elsewhere
I ndigestion or difficulty in swallowing
0 bvious change in wart or mole
N agging cough or hoarseness
& - •
The seven safeguards urged by the American Ckncer Society
are theset-

ing

Viola is also substitute Sunday School teacher for Dr.
Joyce Fan, has served in the choir, has edited two Chinese
cook books. Thousands of copies of these cook books have
been printed, circulated throughout the nation...proceeds
have helped to provide for the building of the sanctuary in
'6l, and now for the to-be built activities building.
Viola quoted a passage from Psalm 116, verses 1 & 2 which
reflects so much a part of her faith..."I love the Lord,
because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Be-
cause he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I
call upon Him as long as I live."
She believes maturity in Christ is not instantaneous. It
is a never-ending study and growth to this present point
and time. What was yesterday is not today and one must
stay ever close to the Bible for continual learning and
growth in understanding.
When she was 5 years of age a milkman came to their home
and thought it was time she became acquainted with the
church. Thus her first experience with God came in a
Congregational Church. At 15 years, she accepted the Lord,
which s+-artf?d the maturation process.
Today St. Francis of Assisi has great influence in her life
...his words of wisdom are her daily guide
"Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace...
where there is hatred let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is dispair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
0 Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be
consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardonedj
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life."
It was my privilege to have been in the presence of a
beautiful soul.
