Battler KO's
Foes In First
(NFH PIO)—A slim fast light
weight just recently added to the
ranks of Uncle Sam's green-clad
nephews has been cutting down
his opponents in the Special Serv
ices sponsored fights at North
Fort Hood with astonishing casual-
ness. In three fights of which none
lasted a full round Larry Arm-
stead of the Ninth Training Co.
has chilled three opponents. One
Leroy Eugene succombed to Arm-
stead's hard hitting light hand in
the record time (for North Fort)
of 55 seconds of the first round.
Armstead is a peaceful looking
guy his face is mild and in Army
fatigue clothing his build is decep
tively thin. But as Larry says
"Conditioning makes the difference
in a fighter."
He trains hard for all his fights
plenty of roadwork bag-punching
rope skipping calisthenics and
sparring. This combined with
every athletes stand-by good food
and a lot of sleep took care of
him in all of his ring engagements.
LOOK AT RECORD
A look at Larry's ring record
puts a little bone into his theory
about "conditioning."
Of his nineteen fights as an
amateur representing the New
Orleans YMCA he won eighteen.
The only fight he ever lost was
his first one and Larry chalks that
up to inadequate training. How
ever the young fighter to whom
he bowed in his first fight also
is the only man who ever went
the limit with him. Larry thinks
it is some kind of hex.
Larry was born and raised in
New Orleans. He puts on gloves
for the first time at fourteen. As
experts agree is the best way he
started young and grew with the
game. As his limbs filled out his
WW NB1¥S
£&&
punches became harder and surer.
His reflexes developed the lightn
ing speed a fighter needs and his
stomach became a hard ridge of
muscles to protect the delicate
inner organs from the punishing
body blows.
HITS IIIS STRIDE
Just prior to entering the Army
Larry had started to hit his stride
the long grueling hours of train
ing were beginning to pay off. He
had already been selected by
"The Ring" magazine one of box
ing's important voices as the
"prospect of the month" in May
of last year. He also had what
he calls his 'toughest fight'. It was
with a soldier Jerry Turner from
Fort Benning Ga.
For four rounds it was a toe to
toe struggle but Larry proved the
harder puncher and Turner went
down. It wasn't two weeks after
that Larry's career took one on
the chin and he made that early
dawn hike to the Induction Center.
He didn't know if he would be able
to box while in the Army so he
is pleased with the opportunity the
Special Services fights offer him.
However he says "to date the
men I have fought in the Army
haven't had as much experience
as I." But he knows the Army has
many good fighters and that one
of these evenings he will climb in
to the ring and find himself in
volved in a very tough scrap.
Larry likes to call himself a
boxer and counter puncher but he
is seldom in the ring long enough
to exhibit much boxing style. In
his haste Larry has shown only a
dynamite right and left to the jaw
so far but in future engagements
he will probably get a chance to
show a lot more.
Keeping Each Other
Away
EXCHANGING LEFTS are Lloyd Easterling (left) and Gene West.
Both threw straight left jabs simultaneously in the first round of a
thrilling light-welterweight bout at the Sports Arena last Sunday.
Easterling' won the bout on a judges' decision at the end of three
hard fought rounds and then went on to beat Edward Taylor for
the Post light-welterweight title.
mSPORTS
GoriVt
Sportsmen Let's get in the fight and give to the March of
Dimes. Let's donate everything we can for one of the noblest causes
of the year. Children the future of the nation are hit by this disease
more than anyone else so let's join the fight so they can play an
other day.
Fort Hood seems to have the tops in boxing this year with three
top fighters wearing the colors of this post in the coming Fourth Army
tournament. Jimmy Quawrells defending Fourth Army featherweight
champion is back again with Fred "Kid" Coca as the middleweight
entry in the tourney.
"Kid" and Jimmy fought a three round battle two Sunday's ago
that was the best fight this post has seen in many years. Coca lost
a close decision to the counter-punching champion. Coca proved he
had the material to cop title No. 2 for the Tankers.
AAU CHAMPION
Number three man is A1 Raymond who exhibited the strongest
punch in the Hood ring in years. "One punch" as they now call Al
floored his heavier opponent with the only punch he threw in the
bout a left hook to the jaw. A National AAU 160 pound champ
in 1949 Raymond is confident that he will make a good showing at
the Fourth Army bouts. So am I.
The 501st MP's seem to be moving along to their 2nd champion
ship in basketball as they continue to be undefeated. The sharp
eyed policemen are not only strong with five fine players but boast
the league's strongest bench which has helped them win many games.
There is one thing lacking in both sports and that's the spectator
interest. It's been very poor. If you fans like good athletics you
should come out and root not necessarily for your team anyone
will do but come out!
