tures, and Al Gerdes spoke about our
famous ancestor.
During this celebration at Casa
Navarro, my husband and I learned
from the site manager that while an
interpretive master plan had been devel-
oped to improve the property, critical
funding was needed to develop a design
plan. Excited by the proposal, I decided
to found an organization, the Friends of
Casa Navarro, to solicit the monetary
support needed to make this innovative
aand impressive plan a reality. At the
time, I did not realize that the organiza-
tion would end up taking on two respon-
sibilities: fundraising and teaching the
public about Navarro's role in Texas his-
tory. While schools, streets, and a Texas
county bore the Navarro name, few
people, including descendants and native
San Antonians, were familiar with Casa
Navarro or the legacy of its former
owner. Additionally, in preparing to
advocate for the historic site, the Friends
discovered that there were misconcep-
tions and historical errors of record
regarding Jos6 Navarro's life that needed
to be corrected.
In the six years since its inception, the
Friends of Casa Navarro has accom-
plished the goal of raising funds for the
design plan and, under the direction of
the Texas Historical Commission, for
the renovation and updating of the his-
toric site. We anticipate that the muse-
um will reopen to the public by the end
of this year. The second part of the
