"You sit here, and
I'll sit there, and
we will paint."
Holly Cox, daughter of
Eugene, recalls her grand-
mother telling her "You sit
here, and I'll sit there, and we
will paint." Her father once
gave her tubes of paint, a pal-
ette, and a palette knife and
told her to practice mixing pig-
ments, an activity that began
her life-long love of color. Cox
grew up in a home filled with
paintings and regular atten-
dance at art exhibits. It seemed
natural, therefore, to begin
showing her own artwork even
before she began classes at
Texas Western College. It was
not unusual for all three gen-
erations to exhibit their work
together before Fern died in
1956; Cox and her father con-
tinued to show together until
his death. In 2010, she co-
authored Into the Desert Light-
Early El Paso Art 1850-1960,
published by the El Paso
Museum of Art. Some of the
public collections holding her
paintings are the El Paso
Museum of Art, the El Paso
International Museum of Art,
the El Paso Art Association
President's Collection, and the
Providence Memorial Hospital. &
Hall of Honor. The family talent, it seems, has now passed to her five-year-old grand-
daughter, Heather Cox, who often starts the day by getting out her own brushes, paints,
and paper and announcing "I want to paint."-Holly Cox
