screen movie or celebrated childhood
birthdays. It was the place teenage boys
took their first date. Some of those same
couples are still enjoying a date night at
the CLIFTEX after many years of mar-
riage.
The CLIFTEX is occasionally used for
church or civic meetings, but it's still just
a movie theater where neighbors, friends,
and people of all ages enjoy movies and
popcorn.
HERITAGE: What has been the impact of
the restoration on the community?
We think that this question could best
be answered by Clifton's Main Street Di-
rector Damaris Neelley. She said:
"The CLIFTEX has been a catalyst in
the revitalization of downtown. It cre-
ated nightlife and an excitement that
had been lost in years past. Because of
the extensive rehabilitation, the theaterhas garnered many featured articles and
television coverage in larger markets,
which provided Clifton great exposure.
The rehabilitation also created a trickle-
down effect, and other rehabilitations
can be seen today. Downtown Clifton
has seen more activity in the past two
years than it's ever seen in the past.
The CLIFTEX offers regular first run
movies Thursday-Sunday, but it also of-
fers special features for school groups,
nursing homes, and birthday parties. It
is not uncommon to see a school bus
from a community more than 30 miles
away parked in front of the CLIFTEX
(and this particular community has
three large movie theaters, but teachers
want to bring the students to a histori-
cal venue). We also host tours of the
theater for special interest groups."
HERITAGE: What kind of advice would
you give to someone considering an under-
taking like this one? What did you learn? We learned several things:
* A number of friends and loved ones will
believe that you have lost your mind...
make sure that you haven't.
* Consider the cost. You will make per-
sonal and financial sacrifices. Most likely
the payback will not be monetary; it will
be the personal fulfillment that you have
made a contribution to something that
will live longer than you will.
* If we can do this, anybody can.

Editor's note: The dual spellings of the-
ater (and theatre) in this article is in-
tentional. This was necessary since the
CLIFTEX uses a spelling that is different
from the HERITAGE magazine style.
