Foundation Helps Restore
Sam Houston Painting
THF President Tom Doell and his wife Susan, of Dallas, rep-
resented the Texas Historical Foundation recently at the
unveiling of a historic portrait of Texas military leader and
statesman Sam Houston at the DeGolyer Library on the
Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas.
In 2007, the Foundation presented a grant to help restore this
historic portrait, painted in 1902 by Texas artist Henry A.
McArdle. The San Antonio artist is known for his sweeping
battle scenes of the Alamo and San Jacinto that hang in the
Texas Capitol in Austin.
During the unveiling, the Texas Historical Foundation was
publicly recognized in comments from the podium. The
Foundation is also listed, with other major contributors, on a
plaque that hangs near
the painting. The fully
restored portrait of Sam
Houston, shown at left,
is now housed above a
doorway in the SMU
S library.
In 1929, the full-
length portrait was
donated to SMU by
+ Texas merchant and his-
torian James DeShields,
S for whom it was painted.
The painting first hung
in SMU's A.V. Lane
Museum, and some time
later, it was loaned to
the Dallas Historical
Society.
Fifteen years ago, two historians, conducting research on
DeShields, discovered the neglected portrait in a Dallas Fair
Park attic. In 1996 the painting was returned to SMU's Bridwell
Library, and officials began a fundraising campaign to help
restore the portrait to its original glory.
According to SMU officials, McArdle paintings are rare, and
they did not know of another north of Baylor University in
Waco. McArdle taught art for many years at Baylor Female
College.
Other organizations interested in applying for a Texas
Historical Foundation preservation grant should start the pro-
cess by accessing www.texashistoricalfoundation.org and look-
ing under the grants link. Applications are downloadable on
the site and reviewed quarterly by the Grants Committee and
the full THF board. Previously funded projects are also listed in
the grants section. Deadlines to submit project proposals are the
first day of September, December, March, and June.L

Y'all Come !Susan and Tom Doell, center and right, of Dallas, are pictured with another
donor at the Southern Methodist University reception where the restored
portrait of Sam Houston, painted by Henry A. McArdle, was unveiled. A
recentlly-discovered agreement from 1941 documented the five-year loan
of the painting by SMU to the Dallas Historical Society. In 1996, the long-
forgotten portrait was returned to Southern Methodist University and
eventually sent to an art conservator for restoration. THF supported the
conservation of the painting with a grant in 2007. The Texas Historical
Foundation board oversees several endowments aimed at assisting groups
across the state save the artifacts, buildings, and culture of Texas.HER I TAGE Volume 2 2009
