Wesleyan reaccredited, moving toward quality improvement planning
Whitney Fowler
SEWS EDITOR
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
(SACS) reaffirmed Texas Wesleyan "s accreditation in
December as part of a 10-year renewal procedure
that examines the university's self-study report, a
visit to the university, which SACS made last
spring, and Wesleyan's responses to SACS recom
mendations.
According to Wesleyan Interim Provost Dr.
Allen Henderson. SACS, as a regional accredita-
tion agency, requires member colleges to undergo
a self-study in which the institution compares its
standards to those created by the peer institutions
that comprise SACS.
"When government began initiating funding
for higher institutions, they were interested in __
maintaining some minimum standards for institu-
tions to receive government financial aid funds and other
funds." Henderson said. "It allows you to qualify for
government grants and our students to qualify for finan-
cial aid programs that are government funded."
As pan of the reaccreditation process, the university
is required to submit a report based on the results of the
self-study to a "team of peer educators from other higher
education institutions." Henderson explained. The team
then visits the university, examining the report as well as
interviewing faculty , staff and students, w hich occurred
at Wesleyan in April.
SACS submits a recommendation to its council that
decides w hether an institution should be reaccredited
"based on your self-study report, the visit
and your responses to the visiting team's
recommendations." Henderson explained.
"Primarily the recommendations we
are working on the most is getting more
systematic assessment processes in place,"
Henderson said. "And that's interesting
because that is really going to help us
move to the new model anyway."
Wesleyan's recent report, Henderson
explained, was based on SACS standards
that are on the verge of major revisions.
Now SACS is moving toward a new
set of standards, entitled the "Quality
Improv ement Model." which Henderson said stretches
bey ond a lists approach and into a "planning assessments
outcome model"
In the future. Wesleyan will be required to submit a
quality improvement plan that "shows we are doing
strategic planning, program planning and assessment and
continuing to use that information to improve our pro-
grams." Henderson said.
"Ev en though the major review goes out every 10

years, any time you start something new or change your
programming, you notify SACS of those kinds of
things."
According to Henderson, Wesleyan's mix of pro-
grams, "as a whole, will stay the same although we
might add or change things," in which SACS would be
notified.
Henderson said that he does not see foresee any
major changes on the horizon for Wesleyan.
"1 think that we're going to have to work on looking
at our mix of programs... As anything, as w e move into
the future, what are the kind of programs that we need to
have that students want and need — that meet a market
need but that also we can support."
Henderson said that it is important to note that
Wesleyan is a member of the SACS association. "It's not
some outside group like the government telling us," he
explained. "It's our own peers that are a part of this asso-
ciation."
For any major changes in programs, Henderson said
that SACS would examine the "organization, financial
and human resources" needed to carry on the programs.
"Like most institutions, we will do a follow-up
report this next year responding to any outstanding rec-
ommendations that we were not able to immediately
address," Henderson said.
Break ins, from page 1
Jones said that she was irritated
at the lack of security at Texas
Wesleyan.
"We try our best to get you
guys all the products you need
to run smooth. People are steal-
ing the food, which is not fair to
the students nor
to our business.
And for security
to not act quick-
ly on a burglary
makes me mad.
I just w ant to
make all aware
of this problem."
The
Rambler con-
tacted Ken
Dunson. director
of Facilines. and
two other securi-
ty members who
did not give
their names
when answering
the phone.
One of the two security
guards acknow ledged that he
knew there was a break in at
Quizno's but did not know that
there had been two.
When asked about the situa-
tion. Dunson said that he did not
know of the incident and w ould
call back, yet no response had
been made to contact The
Rambler by deadline.
Jones explained that the
incident affects the speed of
opening Quizno's for service in
the mominc.
"Now that I have to take
inventory before we open, it
really delays us for that day.
Sometimes it just makes my day
stan off bad," Jones said-

"I don't think it's fair for
tbem to not have help from
security I mean, they [secunty]
are here for a reason." Craft
said.
Jones said that she plans to
go to Wesleyan Security to ask
for help.
"It w ould really help if you
guv s [secunty] would lock up
correctly at the mid-evening."
