and see it done ? Are we ready to see the sons and daughters of Baptists
fall into the snares of Rome? If not, we should look to this matter
quickly. But education for its own sake should be sufficient to prompt
us to this important work.
We submit these suggestions in brief, and beg you look to this, matter.
Our influence and our substance should be laid on the altar of our blessed
Master and of his truth, to sustain this cause. What action should be
taken just now, by this body, we leave to your own wisdom to deter-
mine. G. W. JOINER, Committee.
Elder J. IM. Wright, L. E. S. Williams and Professor R. L.
Hood were appointed a committee to meet with the Little
River Association, to be held at Caldwell, and suggest the
propriety of the'two Associations uniting in the location of
an academy that shall supply the wants of the denomination,
and to which we can give our support, and to'proceed in the
matter as their judgment may dictate.
Report on Books and Periodicals was read, amended and
adopted.
REPORT ON BOOKS AND PERIODICALS.
The social, political and religious prosperity of a people is promoted
or retarded by the influence the books and periodicals exert upon the
morals of those among whom they are circulated. If, in such books
and periodicals, the Bible is recognized as the highest standard of social
and Christian morals, and its truths are taught without garbling them
in any way, which is the most convincing proof of their being held in
this estimation, the prosperity of a people is thereby enhanced, whether
considered in a social, religious or political point of view. On the other
hand, if such views and principles do not govern a people, they do not
realize such happy results. Your committee, therefore, respectfully
suggest, that we, as Southern Baptists, patronize no religious periodical
nor purchase books issued by any publishing house that seems disposed
to compromise the teachings of God's Holy Word, in any way whatever,
which has been the feelings of your committee for years.
Your committee suggests that we circulate such literature only as we
believe to be best adapted to teach the truth as it is in Jesus; and be-
lieving that such literature can be had at the South, we will purchase and
circulate that which may be published and put forth by Southern Bap-
tists and Southern Boards, as far as it will meet our necessities, and we
especially recommend our own Herald, published at Houston by Bre.
Link. Respectfully submitted. J. S. HOLMEs.
