TEKAS PRESS ASSOWTION
AUSTIN—State authorities oil April 3 entered YFZ
Ranch, a 1,700-acre compound located near Eldorado,
owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints and under construction since 2004.
Over a period of a few days 416 children and 139 women
who resided in the compound were placed in state cus-
tody and transported by bus to temporary quarters in
San Angelo. The women reportedly left the compound
voluntarily.
Emergency calls made to a local family violence shel-
ter prompted the state to take action. A caller who iden-
tified herself as a 16-year-old mother reported that she
had suffered physical and sexual abuse Inside of the com-
pound, according to a six-page affidavit filed in Schleich-
er County. The Texas Department of Family and Protec-
tive Services directed the relocation of the YFZ women
and children to San Angelo. An estimated 700 workers
took part in the effort. The agency is lining up guardians
ad litem and licensed foster care for the children. The
San Angelo Standard-Times reported Apri 11 that the
city of San Angelo alone is paying $60,000 a day toward
the care of the children removed from the compound.
The Texas Department of State Health Services is
overseeing medical and mental health services for the
children. The agency reported that about a dozen chil-
dren have what appears to be chicken pox. About 25
mental health professionals were on the job as of April
11, along with four doctors and 10 nurses. Plans were
made to bring in 14 more doctors and medical assistants
to see to the group's needs.
Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House
Speaker Tom Craddick signed a joint letter to Texas
Comptroller Susan Combs, addressing costs arising
from the situation.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
KATIE, HILLARY & ME...CDNTINUED
persistent Sunni/Shiite slips of the tongue.
I'm thinking there maybe some subtle, insidious force at work
here. Something that looks like and smells like....dare I say t?...
sexism? Gasp!
Oh, say it ain't so! This is the 21st century. We're post-femi-
nism, right? We don't have to worry about the glass-ceiling or
women in the workplace making 77-cents for every man's $1.00 or
child-bearing-wliile-you're-on-the-payroll backlash, or mommy-
track career derailments anymore. That Is right, isn't it?
Ms. Gloria Steinem, Margaret Thatcher and the spirits of Bel-
la Abzug, Indira Ghand and others who rabble-roused, burned
their foundation garments and generally made nulsiances of
themselves in the fight for the fundamental rights of women ev-
erywhere can rest easy on their hard-earned laurels. Right? You
know the answer to that.
Give me a break. And while you're at it, CBS News, give Katie a
break. Don't shoot the messenger. You might consider getting your
own house in order before you rearrange Katie's. Voters in Penn-
sylvania, stop listening to the talking heads and start listening to
your own common sense. This election is too important for you to
be distracted by the aptly-monikered idiot box's white noise.
Construction
will soon begin
THE CITY OF CANADIAN is pleased to an-
nounce that the construction phase of the Ca-
nadian Main Street Improvements Project
will soon begin. Within the next two weeks,
the residents of Canadian will see the begin-
ning activities of what is projected to be an
eight to twelve month period of construction
on Main Street. During this period of time,
the street, sidewalks, lighting, and drainage
on Main Street will be transformed from the
rather uti litarian or nonexistent current state,
to what is hoped to be a outstanding addition
to one of the showcase main streets here In the
Texas Panhandle.
As a community that prides itself on its abil-
ty to attract and support tourism, the Main
Street Improvement Project will strength-
en ts ability to do so. More importantly, the
improvements will draw the citizens of the
Hemphill County area "downtown", and hope-
fully strengthen the sense of community that
makes the Panhandle area attractive. Will
there be i nconven iences as a result of the con-
struction activities? Unfortunately, yes there
will be. The City, County, Economic Devel-
opment Council, Main Street Committee, and
the Texas Department of Transportation as
partners have attempted to lessen the effects
of these inconveniences by addressing them
through project phasing and scheduling, al-
ternate entrance programs, alternate routes
of travel, and being cognizant of the needs of
Military honors
ONCE AGAIN, plans are being made for the
Annual Panhandle Veterans Hall of Honor
Banquet. This project was started in 1990,
and was Initiated to recognize and honor those
outstanding Panhandle veterans who have
distinguished themselves in the service of our
country. These honored inductees have been
recipients of such awards as the Silver Star,
Distinguished Flying Cross and even three
Congressional Medals of Honor.
We can never completely show our appre-
ciation to these individuals for their bravery,
love of country and unselfish sacrifices. How-
ever in this small gesture, we hope to let the
living and deceased know they are not forgot-
ten and their sacrifices were not in vain.
In years past, to be eligible for induction
nto the Hall of Honor, the nominee needed
to meet one of four criteria: to be born and/or
raised here in the 26-county Texas Panhan-
dle, to have entered the service while living
here, or to have served at the Pampa Army
Air Field during World War II. Because of
the interest in this program, the board has
elected to expand eligibility to include those
ndividuals stationed in the 26 counties dur-
ng their service, those who moved to the Pan-
handle after being discharged and who made
significant contributions i n or to the military
services, and those individuals who served in
the community.
An informational meeting in regards to
the Main Street Improvement Project has
been scheduled for April 24th, 2008 from 3-6
p.m. The meeting will be informal and has
been planned to provide ample time for ndi
viduals with differing work schedules to ask
questions and receive answers on a one on one
basis. The purpose of the meeting s to pro-
vide a more detailed and personalized look at
the project and how it may affect individuals
and business owners, and to provide informa-
tion regarding how the project will temporar-
ly affect the community.
On the eve of beginning a great new ad-
dition to the City of Canadian and Hemphill
County, I have reflected upon what must have
been a daunting task decades ago with the
construction of brick streets and lighting on
Main Street. I've been told that gullies in the
dirt Main Street were shoulder-high after
rains at that time. Having seen many rains
producing streams of water from the curb to
the center of the street in front of City Hall on
Main Street, I can believe it.
There may have been folks who wanted to
keep the dirt street and thought that the gul-
lies were tolerable in comparison with the in-
convenience of the br icki ng construction proj -
ect. There may be those who feel the same
way about the i nconveniences and changes
planned for Main Street today. I would ask
that we work diligently to overcome the rela-
tively short-term inconvenience and focus in-
stead on the long-term gains the project will
have for the community.

To nominate a deserving individual, write
a short narrative of his or her 1 ife, what branch
of service he or she served in, the awards he
or she received, and f possible, a copy of the
citations that accompanied the awards plus
any copies of newspaper clippings pertaining
to the nominee. We encourage the writer to
tell about the nominee's contributions to his
or her community following the years of mili-
tary service. This will give our selection com-
mittee a better idea as to the overall merit of
the individual.
We need to have all non nations no later
than July 16th. The banquet will be held n
Pampa on Saturday, August 16,7 p.m., at 105
S. Cuyler in downtown Pampa. The inductees
will receive invitations to this ceremony.
