HISTORY
A void is le't behind when great people pass away
As I have grown older
I have seen quite a few
people I have loved and
admired pass away. There
were the usual family
members and friends that
we all love that slowly
leave our lives and even
family pets that we have
become attached to that
depart this life, but never
have I been as aware of
losing people who have in-
fluenced my life as I have
of late. Earlier this year
my pastor, Msgr. Edward
Dokupil passed away. He
truly left a void in the lives
of many of us. Prior to that
a dear friend and church
organist that I had re-
ally gotten to know passed
away, and of course, my
DOCK
JACKSON
mentor and friend, Jerry
Wilhelm, who had taught
me so much in school in
speech and theatre passed
away. These were not fam-
ly members but friends
that had influenced my
life. Through association
with them I have become
a better person. My expe-
riences are richer and my
life fuller due to knowing
and sharing things with
them.
Recently though I have
been in a real dilemma due
to the passing of so many
people that I admire and
respect. With the passing
of Farrah Fawcett, a na-
tive Texan and University
of Texas ex-student and
Michael Jackson, a musi-
cal icon since I was a child,
I have begun to feel a void
in the world. Their passing
really caused me to re-ex-
amine life and look at the
world with a different per-
spective. Life brings many
challenges and changes
and death is an inevitable
change that we all experi-
ence. How we accept it is
another thing, but I think
we all have our way of
dealing with it as it is a
natural progression of life.
And then Walter
Cronkite died. I was to-
tally unprepared for his
passing. Walter Cronkite,
"Uncle Walter" as we all
called him was a fixture
n my life for as long as I
can remember. Although
he was 92, I still expect-
ed him to live forever.
Who can forget the way
he announced the death
of President Kennedy in
1963 or his reporting of
the landing on the moon or
the many political conven-
tions/elections he briefed
us on. When I was young,
I would hurry to complete
my chores in the evening
after school just to be able
to sit patiently in front of
our black and white tele-
vision to hear his every
word. He was the man.
He was the person that
defined knowledge. News
events were only true if he
reported them. That's just
the way it was. He will
truly be missed by me and
many others. Although
we have anchors today,
he was the quintessential
anchor and he really ex-
emplified the word. When
I think of anchor, I think of
Walter Cronkite and then
maybe to a lesser extent
Dan Rather, Peter Jen-
nings and Charlie Gibson.
But Cronkite was the voice
that made sense of all the
world's problems, joys and
events. I am thankful to
have had the experience of
his influence. I only met
him once thanks to his
daughter, Kathy, while
in Austin on a trip at the
University, but that meet-
ing will forever be vivid
n my mind. It wasn't like
we sat down and chatted
for hours or anything, but
although a brief hello and
nice to meet you were ex-
changed, that was a most
memorable occasion. I
had met one of my idols.
A special thanks to you
Walter Cronkite for shar-
ing your gift of knowl-
edge, commentary and
skills with us for so many
years. It just won't be the
same without you...and
that's the way it is.
ELECTRIC CO-OPS
Linemen take 3rd overall
The blazing sun, rows
of 40-foot-tall utility poles,
tents and bleachers of on-
lookers all covered in dust
was the stage for Bluebon-
net Electric Cooperatives's
four linemen teams, judges
and apprentices as they
participated in the 13th
Annual Texas Lineman's
Rodeo.
The event was held at
Nolte Island Park and com-
petitors endured triple-digit
temperatures while wear-
ing long-sleeved shirts,
blue jeans, rubber gloves,
hard hats, safety glasses
and steel-toed boots.
Bluebonnet's Lineman's
Rodeo teams brought home
two awards from the Line-
man's Rodeo. The placing
Bluebonnet team, consisti-
ng of Randall Bownds,
Daniel Fritsche and James
Jordan, was awarded 2nd
place n the Journeyman
Team-Cooperative Division
and the 3rd Place Overall
Journeyman Team.
"It is truly inspiring to
see the Rodeo teams from
across the state compete,"
said Mark Rose, Bluebon-
net general manager and
CEO. "It makes me stop
and think about how much
they have to know and the
pressure they work under
every day, in every kind of
weather, so we can all enjoy
the quality of life we have.
And once again our teams
at Bluebonnet proved we
are among the very best in
the nation."
Journeyman events
included the URD Splice,
Hurt Man Rescue, Bell
Change, Pole Climb (with
an egg in mouth) and
Dead End Pole Trans-
fer. As onlookers watched
from bleachers, linemen
showed off skills that often
bring them out in all kinds
of weather - hurricanes,
storms, excessive heat and
cold - to provide their re-
spective cooperatives with
reliable power. The Senior
Journeyman Team was
consisted of Jeff Hohlt, Ber-
nie Raemsch and Kenny
Roland. Other participat-
ing Bluebonnet Journey-
men were Patrick Little,
John Matejcek, Brandon
Johnson, Brian Mitschke,
Donald Schneider and
Doug Grimm.
Apprentice events in-
cluded Hurt Man Rescue,
a written test, Armor Rod
and Tie and Brace & Bit,
among others and were
performed by Bluebonnet
apprentices Danny Bold-
ing, Kyle Kasper, Matt Hol-
lingsworth, Chance Turner
and Chad Weiss.
Bluebonnet also sent
judges for the rodeo, Greg
Wolf, Kenny Lehmann,
Stacy Mayfield, Carl Miller
III, Johnny Moore and Tim
Grimm.
