GRAYSON COUNTY IS ORGANIZED 95
Peter W. Grayson, for whhom Grayson county was named,
aide to Gen. Burleson when the Texas army captured San Antonio
from the Mexicans in 18-35. Attorney general of the Republic
of Texas ad interim, and a commissioner, together with
James B. Collingsworth, to the U. S. government in an effort to
obtain recognition of the RIcpublic by the United States. In 1838,
candidatefor president of the Republic against Lamar. The
campaign was very bitter and before the election, Col. Grayson
died while on a visit to Tennessee.
Capt. Sidney Sherman, for whom Sherman was named,
commanded the left wing of the little army of Texas in the battle
of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836. He is said to be the first man
to raise the cry "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!"
Sidney Sherman was born in Massachusetts. He was living in
Kentucky when the call for volunteers for the Texas army came.
He left his business, raised and equipped a company of fifty
men and came to Texas. HIe made an attempt to get to the
Alamo to relieve Travis but was unsuccessful. After remaining
with the army several months, he asked permission to return
to Kentucky. President Rurnet did not accept his resignation,
but gave him a commission as colonel of a regiment of
cavalry in the regular service, with orders to proceed to the
United States and enlist his men. Just before he left Texas, his
companions in arms and the Secretary of War presented him
with a stand of colors he had brought to Texas, accompanied by
the following note: "This stand of colors, presented by the ladies
of Newport, Kentucky, to Capt. Sidney Sherman, is the same
which triumphantly waved on the memorable battlefield of San
Jacinto; and is by the government presented to the lady of Col.
Sidney Sherman as a testimonial of his gallant conduct on that
occasion. A. Sonervell, Secretary of War."
In January, 1837, he returned with his family to Texas and
settled on San Jacinto Bay, where he lived for several years. In
1842, he was elected representative in the Texas congressfor
Harris county. At the expiration of Gen. Rusk's term, Sherman
was elected major general by popular vote, which office he held
until the annexation of Texas. He organized a company in Boston
