THE MASSACRE ON THE NUECES RIVER

either by birth or parentage, the other third Americans. Of
the Unionists under command of Major Tegener at Nueces
river fifty-nine were Germans, all of the others Americans, ex-
cept Pablo Diaz, a Mexican. Hon. Edward Degener, the head
of the Advisory Board of the Union Loyal League, was a Ger-
man by birth, but an adopted citizen of Texas and the Ufited
States. In my opinion he was an astute thinker and as loyal to
the Union as any man. Hilmer and Hugo Degener were his
sons.
Of course I have rambled more or less in this report of the
awful tragedy of August 10th, 1862, but only as it appeared
necessary in order to place before the reader all the facts and
circumstances needed for a clear understanding of the affair.
I am sure it will be pardoned.
The following named Unionists were killed on the battle
ground-that is, in the camp attacked by the Confederates:
L. Bauer, J. Behrens, Ernest Besler, L. Boerner, A. Bruns,
Hugo Degener, Hilmer Degener, Pablo Diaz, E. Vater, A Vater,
E. Schreiner, H. Markwart, C. Schaefer, L. Scherholz, J. G. Kal-
enberg, H. Steves, Wm. Tellgmann, M. Weirich, H. Meyershau-
sen. Nineteen in all, not one of whom was buried by the slayers;
but three years later, in 1865, all the bones to be found of those
nineteen martyrs to their convictions were gathered together by
their relatives and friends, and buried at Comfort, Kendall
county, with all the solemnity due to the last remains of good
citizens and true patroits, and over the grave a monument was
placed as a constant reminder of the tragic fate of nineteen
brave Unionists.
The following named Unionists, members of Major Tegener's
party who fell into the hands of Colonel Duffs command sub-
sequent to August 10th, 1862, were killed, and later their names
added to the monument shaft, as well as those killed October
18th: W. Boerner, R. Bronkish, C. Berk, H. Flick, F. Tays, A.
Luckenbach, L. Riebsamen, A. Riebsamen, H. Stieler.
The following named Unionists, members of Major Tegener's
party were killed Oct. 18th, by Confederate troops under the
command of Captain Homsly, while crossing the Rio Grande
