Effie Giannopoulos

Effie Giannopoulos is a veternarian on the staff of City Veterinary Center in Oak Lawn. Dr.
Effie is beloved for her friendliness and for her compassion for pets and their owners. The cen-
ter she helps run is a resort for animals, which includes several live-in purring cats that greet vis-
itors in the lobby. More than half of the center's clients are members of the GLBT community,
according to the center.
How many of your clients are members of the GLBT community?
At least 60 percent, and some days it's up to 80 percent. Definitely more than half.
What kind of pet owners do they make?
Our clients that come here are fantastic pet owners that treat their pets as if they are their chil-
dren. It's really family-like. A lot of times the pets play more important roles in their lives as
companions, rather than just pets.
Are they willing to do more for their pets?
In many instances they don't have children, and they elect to put their disposable income into
their pet's welfare. Especially with the more severe illnesses that can be devastating, we see a
lot of them wanting to do whatever they can for their pets.
What is the funniest thing you've seen done for pets?
There are so many humorous things. Somedays we just really laugh. The Halloween cos-
tumes are always really good. We get super-hero animals and things like that. One lady
puts doggie motorcycle goggles on her pet, and there's the leather bondage outfits.
What's the most expensive thing you've seen done for pets?
I've seen people spend lots of money traveling. They take them to ritzy first-class types
of places where they spend hundreds of extra dollars just for their pets to stay with them.
