House fire contained

Sweetwater firefighters
responded to a house fire
at 709 Walnut Monday
evening. Nobody was in
the home during the fire
and the cause was said to
be a wood burning stove.
According to Fire Chief
Grant Madden, a wood
burning stove had been
installed in the home
the day before and was
put too close to the wall.
Firefighters contained
the blaze to one room in
the home and a part of
the attic.
The winter months are
a time of the year when
the threat of home fires
increases.
Almost one-third of
all home fires occur dur-
ing the winter, accord-
ing to the National Fire
Protection Association,
resulting in billions of
dollars in property dam-
age, as well as thousands
of injuries and deaths.
Fires can stem from
many sources includ-
ing too many plugs in
an outlet, portable heat-
ing devices or fireplaces.
However, there are pre-
cautions that homeown-
ers can take to keep their
homes and families safe
this chilly season.
"When heating a home
in the winter, it is impor-
tant to remember not to
overload the extension
cord. Some extension
cords are only made to
carry a small electrical
load and they are the ones
that are cheap and easy
to obtain. The cords that
are made to carry more
electrical load cost more
and are harder to find,"
said Sweetwater Fire
Chief Grant Madden.
He said that many fires

red Barta visits ■
Sweetwater
BY CASEY LARUE COVINGTON
Staff Writer
Tred Barta, who hosts The Best and Worst of Tred
Barta on the Versus Channel, was in Sweetwater last
week to learn a thing or two about roping.
Tred Barta is a hunter, fisherman and general out-
doorsman. As a fisherman, Tred has amassed several
world records, some still current. He is best known in
this area for catching more Big Eye tuna on rod and reel
than any other man alive.
"It's not how big your trophy is, it's what it means to
you," Tred Barta began. "May 6, of this year, I had just
gotten back from a ride with my beautiful wife, and my
leg went gimp. Six days later, I was paralyzed from the
waist down, and then the next day I was paralyzed from
the chest down," Barta explained. "They had originally
thought I suffered a spinal stroke caused by a rare, blood
disorder called Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, but
they still aren't for sure what it is," Tred Barta said.
After this tragedy Tred Barta was determined to
keep on living like he had before. At the Nolan County
Coliseum, Barta accomplished greatness. Riding his
personal horse — whom he has been working with for
months — with a saddle made like a seat and strap to
help him stay in the seat; Barta was determined to learn
to rope.
He was only able to use his upper body strength to
swing the rope, but after a few lessons he had it down.
He accomplished exactly what he wanted to.
"I got a rope on a steer going two miles per hour and
tomorrow it will be going four miles per hour," Barta
said, with great accomplishment.

ing. Barta, a hunter, fisherman and general outdoorsman got the chance to learn to
rope at the Nolan County Coliseum.
