on Bayard and to remodel both that site and the lower gallery/office/shop space. No date has yet been set for the move
Kinbery Deveepeet, the director of the Rice University Art Gallery (n_e Sewall Gallery) plans to "reinvent the gallery."
Davenport will draw on her experience as curator of contemporary art at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut,
to bring the gallery firmly into the contemporary arena. The gallery will be closed this fall for remodeling, but if you stop by in
the coming month you just might be treated to temporary video programming by the likes of Adrian Piper. Loook for a full-
scale reopening this spring.
Is Censorship gone for good? Pranksters waited until the vacation month of August to strike at DiverseWorks. The 7 1/2 x 10
foot RaesNel eeker painting which inaugurated the warehouse district location in 1989 was stolen, and DW is offering a
$1,000 reward (up from the earlier $250) for tips leading to its recovery. The painting, titled "Censorship" and depicting a man
with a cartoon fist superimposed on his face, was done on three horizontal panels. We know that Welter e.pps is feeling

Reekel Heeker is organizing a student-run alternative space at the University of Houston. They're taking over the underused
Small Projects Room with an inaugural exhibit of works that measure 4"x4". Students are currently coming up with proposal
guidelines and plan to have openings that coincide with Blaffer's.
A moment of silence please, for Jim PitHle, who fell off a ladder at Zocalo Theater and broke three vertebrae. No, he is not
paralyzed. In fact, he should eventually be just fine-though he's flat on his back for a while. Consolations all around, for we
know that Jim's audience must eventually suffer what he suffers_
James Be9iseu has been seen about town lately in his new custom wheelchair. As part of the legal battle surrounding his
care, there will be a fundraiser for him on Oct. 19. Expect "art/rock"ers Catbox, food, and a sale of Bettison's art, with a S10
ticket price.
Rice Media Center has hired photographer Bill Tllemes as photographic coordinator, replacing Pele Kre.s, who has
moved to Dayton, Ohio. Thomas also teaches photography part time, filling in the gap left by the departure of Peter Brewn.
The university has no plans to hire a full-time replacement for Peter at this time.
Photog Lwre Letlasky, whose brief stay in Houston included shows at Lawndale and Sally Sprout Gallery, has taken a
tenure-track teaching position at the University of Chicago.
The Orange Show hired Rice grad JeemfNer MeKey on as program and parade coordinator-last year she put the parade
together in three months flat. Also, Glassell Core Fellow Amber legle is now weekend supervisor and Micbelle Willimsl
is the new publicity coordinator. Christy Cex.Sliiberegel has a new title, assistant director. Their gala, with Etta James,
will be October 28.

Former Houstonian Jemale Olser, a visual and performing artist also known for her illustrations in the NYT Book Review, will
offer a week-long workshop on animated visual environments. The workshop, Oct. 3 - 8, is free if you puppeteer in her avant-

Kelli Seelt Kelley will be teaching a one-semester course on performance art for the Houston Community College this
spring. The class promises access to Houston performance, history of the genre and the chance for students to create their own
