GLASSELL SCHOOL OF ART
MARCH 25-APRIL 24
by Chris Ballou
"... And the Lord said ... let us
go down, and there confound
their language, that they may
not understand one another's
speech ..." Thus was Babel
created, and it could be said
that humankind has spent its
history since trying to undo
this curse. As a form of
communication, art has
always faced this same
dilemma, both literally and figuratively. In our own time, many artists seem willing to
abandon the very characteristics that are widely believed to define the essence of art in
an effort to convey their message. Teeming with stances, ideas, and attitudes, the "1994
Core Show" at the Glassell School of Art affords us an opportunity to test the
communicative viability of art at a time when more languages and vocabularies of
varying types are in circulation than ever before.
