Photographs of ordinary couples before, after and
while making love, having sex or maybe just thinking
about it. They're on worn-out couches and
waterbeds, in small bedrooms where the TV and
VCR are handy, the dresser top crowded with
cosmetics. They've got hairy backs, stretch marks,
pimples on their asses, bald heads. They look at
one another with questions in their eyes. They look
at the camera with a challenge.
This is intimacy without eroticism - nakedness not
nudity. Applause to all these people for their
courage. Applause to Letinsky for creating the
situations that let them use it. She says she tried "to
examine and articulate what love ... looks like".
Looks like she did it to me. *

Drawings, my ass. Six huge pieces of treated
linoleum in underwater blues and greens, smeared
with thick charcoal in rain clouds, feathers, blowing
hair. Some have little buildings peeping out, castles
or prisons, maybe barns and silos. On the whole
strangely calming. As I walk around the room
attempting to digest the pieces, I notice the mood of
each drawing changes as it is seen from a new angle.
This needs some time. *
