Some weeks ago, my friend Frances Colpitt asked me to write a piece for ARTL!ES.
I agreed, without thinking, and then began wondering just what I would focus on.
I thought about it for weeks, and along the way rejected many different ideas.
I didn't wish to make critical judgments; I find it very difficult at times to do so.
Having once written a "manifesto," which I no longer honor, I know how pointless
such an effort can be. I began to wonder just what qualified me to make a state-
ment about painting, and further reflection led me to recall those moments that
moved me to this present place. Thus from there to here...ARTL!ES Summer 2005 33
