News From Your
County Agent
Johnnie A. McKay
The Cherokee County Animal
Health Committee met Thursday
night in the County Court Room jack Stone oi Wells Secretary
in Rusk to discuss progress up-to- Treasurer of the Committee,
date on the screwworm control reported that aboct $3,000 has
program in the state and in Cher- been collected by workers in the
okee County. About 20 persons county thup far to be applied on'
were in attendance with Dr. J. C. the statewide screwworrr. control!
program. ]
According to Dr. Hill and others I
that have been working closely
with the fund drive to collect for
the screwworm control program.
and sportsmen that have not been j
contacted for contributions to the,
project. The Committee thenj
made specific plans for publicizing;
the purpose of the screwworm j
control program and ways of!
making further contacts for com- j
pleting the fund drive.
A big factor in the success of
this eradication program wilt be!
the responsibility of the individual
livestock producer. He must be a-
lert to possible screwworm cases
among his livestock, take prompt
action in treating the possible
screwworm cases, collect ten of
the worms after treatment, put
them into a vial in either alcohol
or water and get them to the
County Agent's office so that they
n*.a* be shipped to the laboratory
at KerrviHe for p sitive identifi-
cation. If the worms are diagnosed
as the true screwworm. then fieid
inspectors will visit the herd
owner soon thereafter. Each live-
stock producer who submits speci-
mens will get a report on the'
anaiysis of those specimens. It is j
also planned that if screwworm
cases are positively identified,
they wi!] begin an immediate re-;
lease of the sterile screwworm
flies in the county concerned in
order to control that outbreak.
