Students, parents, teachers, ad-
ministrators, and the community
at Dublin ISD have the unique
opportunity to equip students
with 21s century skills with our
1:1 Technology Initiative. Our
vision is preparing today's stu-
dent for tomorrow 's world. We
feel providing content in a mo-
bile environment encourages
learning, increases parental
involvement, and strengthens
relationships with all partners
involved in a student's academic
success. Our vision is ongoing
and includes participants from
all areas: students, teachers,
parents, community leaders, and
district administration. All
partners were and are continu-
ally involved in the process of
making Dublin ISD's vision a
reality. We feel that the technol-
ogies are only a small part of a
larger vision of not only in-
creasing student success on
state and national assessments,
but more importantly, helping
students acquire 21st century
thinking and technical skills to
help them become successful
after high school.
As with many districts, within
Dublin ISD, many parents do not
have advanced technical training
and/or computer skills. With this
in mind and to ensure proper care
of the laptops, every parent was
required to attend a Care and Use
training session (to ensure parental
awareness of expectations for stu-
dent responsibility with the laptop)
before their student was issued a
laptop. These sessions also includ-
ed information about internet safe-
ty and district guideline handbooks
were provided.
Connecting with students has al-ways been a top priority in Dublin.
Creating content that is student
driven is a top priority for Dublin
High School this school year. For
example, having students create a
podcast on lab safety in a science
class, high school students creating
eBooks published on an iTouch for
elementary students to enhance
reading programs, or utilizing
Skype with our local museum on
how our community came together
to solve a problem allows for stu-
dents to see how their curriculum
content is utilized in their
world. The teachers at Dublin
High School are recording instruc-
tional podcasts for students, par-
ents, and tutors that can be ac-
cessed on their classroom blog or
wiki. Dublin High School has also
begun using an online simulated
assessment developed by In-
foSource and aligned with ISTE's
NETS-S 21st century standards in
all technology courses. This re-
source should provide useful data
for future instructional decision
making.
According to ISTE, implementa-
tion planning is "a systemic plan
aligned with a shared vision for
school effectiveness and student
learning through the infusion of
information and communication
technologies (ICT) and digital
learning resources." (ISTE, 2010).
Dublin ISD has recently imple-
mented the CSCOPE curriculum
and believes that integration of
technology, along with the strong
curriculum focusing on higher or-
der thinking skills, will push stu-
dents to think critically, collabo-
rate, and problem solve. Faculty
and staff have visited with other
school districts implementing simi-
lar 21 Stcentury learning environ-
ments, technologies, and curricu-Connecting with students

priority in Dublin.24
