by Brendan Cronin
Contributing Writer
The baseball team started its season 3-
0 after sweeping a doubleheader from
Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College Fri-
day and easily taking Sunday's game
against Paul Quinn College.
In the first game Friday, the Crusaders
scored only four runs on six hits and left
seven on base, but eight strikeouts from
starter Logan Stout (1 -0) and reliever Mike
Anderson kept Hillsdale from scoring.
Leadoff hitter and center fielder Brian
Spinner stole two bases and drove in two
in support.
With a double in his second at bat, se-
nior first baseman Jesse Nelson broke UD
career marks for hits (154, held by Dan
Housten) and doubles (38, held by Tapley
Holland).

pick up the victory.
Dallas left 10 on base in the game.
The Crusader bats came out of hiding
against Paul Quinn Sunday.

Tennis teams start season
by Jack Price
Sports Editor
The UD tennis program
opened its spring 2002 season
over the weekend in Abilene,
playing matches against Howard
Payne University and Hardin-
Simmons University.
"These were probably the two
toughest opponents we will face
this season," head coach Lon
Rork said of the team's opening
weekend. "It's tough that we
faced them this early, but it was
good experience."
The men's team lost both
matches Friday.
The women's squad defeated
Howard Payne Wednesday after-
noon before falling to Hardin-
Simmons later that evening.
"It's nice to come out of good
competition 1-1 so far," Rork
said. "We look for the women to
have a strong season this year."
The women will be led by an
experienced core of four seniors,
including Sarah Gaunt, Hilda
Beauchamp, Emily Voynich, and
Bekki Johannes.
Sophomore Anna McMinn is
expected to have a solid season
also this year, competing as the
team's number two player.
The team of Gaunt, UD's
number one, and McMinn should
be formidable as the squad's top
doubles team.
The men's team returns just
two players from last year, Danny
Gil and Ryan Wagner, and is
missing last season's number one
player, Alex Barnes.
"They are going to get off to a
little slower start probably," Rork
said of the men's team. "Every-
one has to move up a spot right
now and it will take some adjust-
ing to get back on track."
Rork expects good tilings from
the tennis program this year, say-
ing that at least 12 of the team's
17 scheduled matches are very
winnable.
"If we come out and play,
there's no reason we can't win 12
or 13 matches this year," he said.
UD's tennis teams travel to
Austin to play Concordia this
weekend and hosts its first home
matches Sunday Feb. 24 and
Monday Feb. 25.
