In Hie meantime Robinson who

Robinson waa aafe at second.
Tbe second bag was vacated when

BIG LEAGUE GOSSIP
By CHRISTY MA THE WSON
OF THE NEW YORK GIANTS.
I (Copyright 1(13 by Wheeler Syn&l-
cate. Inc.)
Pittsburgh Sunday. August 3. The
pennant race In the National league is
ust sprawled all over the schedule
now. The Giants started away from
home on what was to be a critical trip
according to such authorities as John
Bvers of Chicago and Red Dootn of
Philadelphia. Philadelphia Is the
only team which la holding on at all
In the going at present. The spurt
of the Pirates during their la.e East-
ern trip haa curled all up on Itself
like a snail does when you put salt
on It.
The condition of the battling for
first place In the American league la
just about as bad. The Athletics have
practically broken up competition and
are a great force In restraint of con-
tention for the championahlp. When
Connie Mack led his club West re-
cently. It tottered here and there
mostly in Detroit. The pitching waa
not aa substantial aa It had been and
several American league leaders in-
cluding Clarke Griffith leaped Into
the newspapers with such statements
as:
"The Athletics will now crack."
'Their pitching staff Is gone."
"Plant Is about to buckle up and
drop out of sight."
But the Athletics have returned
home and busied themselves by en-
gaging in a nice little winning ses.
slon. Bddle Collins the second base
man writes a letter to a friend of
mine.
"We had what we consider a good
Western irlp" says Collins "and now.
If we can make a good home stand say
win about eleven or twelve ' f our six-
teen home games 1 can't figure how
anyone will catch ua unless we all
get caught In a railroad wrack."
Prom these returns It looks as If
tha championahlp contention In both
leagues waa Just all mussed uu and
that It mlgfir-as well be put away Into
the mow&rns until next season. Still
baseball taa funny game and a bis
slump eouM drag either the Giants or
the Athletics I..1. k to within hailing
distance of their neareet pursuers
within two or three weeks. The lead
ers In ear h league have a margin of
about tan gamea now. Suppose for
Instance that tha Giants should lose
ten straight while the I'hlllles ran in'o
a battering Inning streak. They would
ba right up on even terms with ua
then In the big leagues a lead of
ten games la considered to bs a aafe
one. If they cut a lead of tea down
to five they are on your heela and
have you worrying.
Look at the paychology of this. A
club la cruising along wllh a I wad of
nine or ten games. Everybody la talk
ing pennant. Then for sum reason
that none can explain the team be
gins to loss. Perhaps two or tin. e
of the pitchers suddsnly hava the
edges worn off their form afaybs -n
tnftelder. auch as I-.") Iuyla who
la a cog In the working of tha team
la Injured. On or two of the rail-
abls batters eannot see tha balL The
second team In the standing creeps up
day after day In spite of all that eaa
be done. The finish is getting elogst.
Thla gradual gain wears on ths league
leader. They begin to doubt them-
selves to wonder whether they can
hold tha laad. one magnificent but
now stiru ellng Nothing has baas) as
peoted of the pursuing club. Its play-
ers become Intoxicated with tha sense
of victory They travel beyond their
normal pace. The team regain lis

selves and I wlrlars who hava boon

rot NATION AI) I HtMPItIN SHIP TENNIS flA-MEN
Though one of the oldest veterans In
the game he retains much of hla
dash and skill and I expected to make
n good showing In the national cham
plonshlp games which will begin here I
a result of the winning streak. Such
a situation is tho only thing the Giants
have to fear now. It la the psychol-
ogy of baseball. Big leaguers- give It
the leu elegant name of the "break
of the game."
Waahlmrton In the American league
and Philadelphia In the National am
the only two club which are threat-
ened with being attacked by atuch
streaka. Winning several gamea
would do neither of these clubs any
good with the Giants and Athletics
moving aa they are going now. The
two leaders must break In order to be
caught and right here Is where the
value of a great manager enters Into
It. He refuses to permit hla team to
continue to wobble long. McGraw Is
the greates; man in baseball to ad-
minister restoratives to a ulub when
It begins to fo.de. The manner in
which he keeps after the players Is
Irresistible. Ills driving Is terrific.
Once more let me bring up the case
of the Olanta last season. We were
sway out in front In July but we took
Che lead much earlier than we did
this year. Then the Cubs started to
come and we. began to go back. They
came up within four games of us If I
remember rightly and we came Into
Pittsburgh to face a hard series. Mc-
Graw was throwing hla whole heart
and all hi energy Into the ball club.
Tha manager .lid the trick. He got
us back on our feet and gave ua a
restoration of confidence. ' We startd
off again and won the pennant. I do
not look for any auch narrow aqueege
again thl year but as I say. It Is
within the range of possibility.
Outside of the contention for first
place there are liable to ba several
changes In the standing In both
leagues before tha final results ar In.
Washington Is pnssalng Clavelsnd very
hard and the Napa are hanging onto
second place only by tha merest fringe
at this writing. Bngle the pl'cher Is
tilling along In good shape. He won
two games last week by close scores
frum the St. I. He Browns. Griffith
Is pretty well fixed for pitchers at
present r. .x haa now crowded
himself Into thai section of the pitch
trig talent designated as (ha 'stars of
the gam."
To bo aure Doehllng has been beat-

thla should help rather than hurt bun
Both Walter Johnson and hs will win
a lot of games for the Senators and I
believe (he W'aslilugton club has the
best chance to flalah second In that
league. Right now tha Senators hava
an advanttge over tha Cleveland team
because (hay are playing on their own
grounds while the Naps are away
from home H irmngham'a boys al-
ways show lo better advantage on the
home grounds.
Chicago got a had crowding out of
tba contention for second place wben
the Red Sx struck Into something
Ilka their last seasons form on their
arrival home and look four s(ralghi
from the White Sox. Thla ((ring of
vlctorlM made a big Impression on the
Boston fans so I am told and they
are talking second place at the Hub
again Incidentally CJarrtgan Is pick-
lag up a lot of praise aa a manager
It la my notion (hat (ho world's cham-
pions are going to have a tough fight
finally getting out of ihe second divi-
sion because they are bound lo meat
a whol lot of competition. Ths White

Some of the old fight haa developed
In the De(rolt (cam recently. It waa
t tils quarrelsome spirit fostered large-
ly by the personall y of Hughle Jen-
nings which pushed the Tigers to
three American league championships
What Jennings needs most now Is
some efficient pitching. The Tigers
are weak In the box but a careful
survey of the rest of the talent will
convince anyone that It has capabili-
ties. The Infield Is a very good one
with Hush at hor(a(op Morlarlty at
int. i. and Gainer at first base. Any
outfield with Cobb and Crawford In
It Is bound to possosa merit.
Only recently It looked (o me as If
either Pittsburgh or Chicago had an
excellent chance to finish second In
the Natlohal league race. Hut both
clubs have cracked badly within the
past week. The I'hlllles showed they
had no Intention of relinquishing their
(oe hold on second place when (hey
(ook three out of four from the Pi-
rates on (heir own grounds. The Pitts-
burgh pitchers do not seem to be right.
Hen. Ins and Adams and all the rest
who showed star ball In the ttas( have
been hammered since reluming home.
The Plra(es' chances of geUIng ln(o
second niche are declining every day.
The Cuba are noi In very good shape

(hey were on edge to meet the Giants
who had just journeyed out of the

cated. They all halo the Glanla at
Chicago but It la a profitable hale
because the New York club draws big
crowds any time It plays (here. Tho
Cubs always pu( up a better fight
against us than they do when playing
several of the weaker team In the
league too. Ever has been up against
It for pitchers all summer He la no
