Students work to name new mascot
The Rio Grande City High School students pictured above have been working to determine
the mascot at the new high school in the Grulla area. Pablo Martinez, the principal of the
new school, spoke to the studnets on the importance of their decision. Also present to assist
the students were Abel Gonzalez III, the new school's head football coach, and key
Ramirez, the RGCCISD Athletic Director. The RGCCICSD board of trustees were
scheduled to vote on a mascot name at their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9. (RGCCISD

A team of 14 students
from Rio Grande City High
School met recently to
brainstorm and come up
with a list of names for the
new RGCCISD Grulla High
School Mascot.
I he students represented
the different grade levels and
are from the areas that will
pertain to. the new school.
They are very excited to be
part of such a historical
event. Dr. Pablo Martinez,
principal for the new high
school, talked to the
students about how this
committee was given the
important task of providing a

annual Fair
reception
The International Bank of
Commerce will sponsor their
2010 reception honoring the
Starr County Fair Queen,
Parade Marshal Emma L.
Gonzalez, 2010 scholarship
winners and their parents,
and volunteers. This year's
reception and dinner will be
held at the I B.C Bank in
Rio Grande City on Tuesday
evening, February 23, at
6:30 p.m.
Martha Barrera. assistant
vice-president, IBC-Rio
Grande City, chairman of the
annual event, stated that the
bank is proud to sponsor the
event, which honors those
who help with the fair, as
well as the special honorees
each year.
A delicious dinner is
scheduled, with the officers
and staff of the bank serving
as hosts Members of the
Starr County Fair Board of
Directors will be on hand to
congratulate all of the
honorees.

Dr. Martinez asked the
students to take time in
making their selections
because they were not just
representing themselves,
their peers, the community,
but all of the students who
will attend this school for
years to come. He asked
them to seek within and take
pride in this endeavor.
Martinez also expressed to
the students about how the
two schools would work
together as one in the
district. He said, "we are
not breaking off, we will
come to games on Friday
night to support and cheer
lor the Rattlers because the
schools will be sister schools
and not rivals." Mr Jorge
Recio welcomed the students
and re-iterated what had
already been said.
Mr. Rick Solis, RGC High
School Counselor, told the
students that this was history
in the making "this is bigger
than us." He stressed the
importance of the
committee. Mr. Abel
Gonzalez, who will be Head
Coach/Boys Coordinator,
directed the students in the
process that would be
followed in making the
decisions.
Mr. Rey Ramirez, Athletic
Director, was also present
and welcomed the students
and assisted Mr. Gonzalez in
explaining the process to the
students..
The students will present
the top selections to all the
students who fall in the new
high school jurisdiction at a
latter date and will have the

Counseling Week
Rio urande City CISD
Counselors were treated to a
breakfast in their honor in a
culmination of National
Counselors Week which was
scheduled for February 1-5,
2010. The breakfast, hosted
by Director of Guidance and
Counseling Mrs. Adelina
V i I larreal and Federal
Programs Director Mr. Joel
Salinas was held at the
Holiday Inn Express in Rio
Grande City.
Mr. Joel Trigo, Principal,
welcomed all present to the
event. He also thanked the
city and county officials who
were present at the
celebration for their support
of the school district and the
good working relationships
that have been forged among

morning, Feb. 8, the County
Commissioners voted to
install a countywide burn
ban for 90 days even taking
into account recent
substantial rains.
Precinct One
Commissioner Jaime
Alvarez commented, "People
still want to burn for every
imaginable purpose."
Precinct Three
Commissioner Eloy Garza
declared, "I'm agreeable to it
if it's a controlled burn with
authorization."
The commissioners ihen
voted to set in place a
countywide burn ban for 90
days, with controlled burning
permitted under county
authorization.
A burn ban had not been
in place for the previous 90
days due to recent significant
rains.
Federal/State Programs
Coordinator Rafael Montalvo
told the commissioners.
"We're hoping to start
construction of the transfer
station. We're still having
meetings with NADBANK.
'Congressman Cuellar's
office will be dealing with
NADBANK"
County Judge Eloy Vera
insisted, "We need to get
moving on this project
because the landfill will be
closing in the near future.
We can borrow from our
depository bank if
NADVANK doesn't come
through (with funding). If
not, INS (Interest and
Sinking) should be enough
to cover the loan."
Janie Alvarez of the
Federal/State Programs
Office declared. "TDRA
projects are ail in order.
There is a modification
needed on patchwork in
Precinct One. Five Star is
getting awarded the
competitive project. The
work will begin at the
intersection of Embassy and
(another street)."
The commissioners were
told that International Bridge
revenues for January 2010
totaled $210,830.50, a
decrease of $15,074 from the
January 2009 amount of
$225,904.50. The January
2010 total showed a decrease
of $39,424.50 from the
December 2009 figure of
$250,255.
Judge Vera commented,
" The decline from December
to January is more or less
typical of every year."
Elections Administrator
Rafael Montalvo noted,
"Feb. 23 is the last day for
mail-in requests to be in my
office."
Sheriff Rene Fuentes
reported that Detention
Center revenues for January
2010 amounted to
$98,609.89, with $86,464
coming from the U.S
Marshals Service. On
Monday, Feb 8, there were
92 federal inmates and 93
county inmates for an overall
count of 185 inmates.
Wild Game Dinner
fundraiser set for Saturday
The Rio Grande City
Rotary Club invites the
public to attend its annual
scholarship fundraiser for
the Starr County Fair
scholarship recipients of
2010. The annual Wild
Game Dinner is set for this
Saturday, I ebruary 20.
Doors open at 6:00 at the
James Peterson Memorial
Building at the Starr County
Fairgrounds, and serving
begins at 6:30 p.m.
Advance tickets for S15
per person, are available at
Rio Motor Co. from Event
Chairman Billy Canales, at
the Starr County Teachers
Federal Credit Union, and
from members of the Rotary
Club. Admission will be
$20 per person at the door.
A silent auction and live
auction will be held to raise
funds for youth scholarships.
Items may still be donated
■ from local or valley
businesses and individuals.
Gift certificates make great
donations and bring
customers to your
establishment. Take your
donated items to Rio Motor
Co. any time before
Saturday. Your donation is
appreciated and tax-
deductible.
The variety of food will be
even better than ever, with
H-E-B expanding its seafood
servings from shrimp and
catfish to include even more
of the smorgasbord of
offerings at their expanded
Seafood Market. A
newcomer to the event is
Cielito Lindo Restaurant
which will be preparing its
famous armadillo guisado.
Rio Motor Co. will be
roasting a wild hog
Hawaiian-style in a pit.
Wal-mart will once again
be serving water and soft
drinks as they did in 2009.
All food and drink booths
are generous donors of their
talents and resources for the
sake of the scholarship
recipients.
A treat is in store after the
auctions, as Country
Roland's son and other
musicians will play after
9:00 p.m.
Many thanks to the Rotary
Club of Rio Grande City and
their president. Doralisa
Saenz, for all their hard
work on this event that
benefits Starr County youth
from all three high schools.
The event will officially kick
off the 45th annual fair.

Elsa DeLeon to crown new Queen
The 2009 Starr County Fair Queen, Elsa Del.eon, will crown the 2010 Queen at the Fair
Pageant this Sunday evening, February 21. at 6:00. The pageant will be held at the Fort
Ringgold auditorium in Rio Grande City. Young ladies pre-k through high school are
encouraged to compete for the title of Queen and Princesses in the Teen category . Pre-Teen
category, and Petite category. The 2010 royalty will reign during the Starr County Fair and
will ride in the parade and be featured at events throughout the fair. Anyone interested in
participating in the pageant, call the Starr County Extension Office at 487-2306. Entry
