filed for 15 Starr County offices
in the March 2006 Democratic
primary, with six positions
featuring contested races.
The filing deadline for the
March 7, 2006 Democratic
primary was Monday, Jan 2 at
6:00 p.m. The same deadline
applied throughout the entire
state.

TEA. The "Evening with the Stars" celebration was held at The Club at Cimarron in Missioi, Seated

for creativity in classroom
Community Youth Choir presents
5th annual Christmas musical
Daniel Trevino, a seventh
and eighth grade Art teacher at
Ku in a Middle School, is
being recognized for his
creativity and success in the
classroom as a Disney Teacher
Award Nominee.
9 Trevino joins an elite group
of teachers from across the
country who have been
recog n i zed by their
cL .tunities. As the next step
in the awards process, Trevino is
•pow submitting an application
to be considered for the 2006
Disney Teacher of the Year
Award.
Trevino commented, "It is

The Rio Grande City
Consolidated Independent
School District honored those
campuses who received
academic recognition from the
-Texas Education Agency (TEA).
H'he "Evening with the Stars"
Recognition Celebration was
held at The Club at Cimarron in
Mission, Texas on November 9,
2005.
In order for a Texas
^ilementary school to be
recognized by the state a certain
criteria must be met. There are
several factors that are taken
into account such as;
1. At least 70 percent of students
must pass each subject area
tested; Reading ELA, Writing
Mathematics, and Science or by
meeting Required Improvement.
2. At least 70 percent of each
subgroup must pass each test
such as; Hispanic, African
American, White, and

for this award. I hope that this
serves as an inspiration for all of
my students. Hopefully all of
the things that are taught in my
classroom will benefit my
students as far as furthering their
education."
A school spokesman said,
"Mr. Trevino believes that all
students can learn—they simply
have to have 'ganas' (i.e., they
simply have to want)."
Since 1989, Disney Teacher
Awards have been presented to
teachers who construct learning
environments where students and
teachers alike explore, imagine
and engage in a variety of
stimulating ideas and
experiences. Specifically, the
program honors those teachers
whose approaches exemplify
creativity in teaching and who
inspire a joy of learning in their
students.
"Sixteen years ago, we started
celebrating local heroes by
establishing the annual Disney

Dave 'Chachi' Jones
files for District Clerk
Dave "Chachi" Jones has
announced his candidacy for
Starr County District Clerk,
declaring, "I am announcing my
candidacy for the Starr County
District Clerk upcoming
Democratic Primary Elections,
because I believe that it is time
for a new era of leadership in
county government that will
reflect our future."
Mr. Jones indicated that he
"comes from a political family
beginning with my grandfather
Dewitt Jones Sr., to my father
Dewitt "Chachi" Jones, and
prominent family by blood
Commissioner Eloy Garza;
politics has already been in my
blood."
Jones added, "As a third
generation politician and over 20
years of working in the criminal
justice field in both the Hidalgo
and Starr County Courthouse
and as a Certified Private
Investigator licensed under the
Texas Department of Public

annual Christmas musical on

Zarate Center for the performing
arts
Friends, family and
community flocked to the
performing arts center for this
year's production: "Miracle On
Bethlehem Street." Also in
attendance on opening night;
State Representative and Mrs.
Ryan Guillen, Chief Executive
Officer of Community
Action Council of South Texas,
Mr. Francisco G. Zarate and
Administrator of Community
Development and Rural Services
for The Texas Commission On
The Arts, Mrs. Mia Buentello-
Andrade.
Mrs. Buentello had the
following comments to share
regarding the performance:
"I have enjoyed attending the
performances of the Cantare1
Community Youth Choir for the
last three years and 1 have
always been impressed by the
professionalism that has been
exhibited on stage by these
young students.
"The dedication of the
parents, students, volunteers and
Mrs. Reyna are evident by the
high quality of their
performances." Mrs Buentello
added that the Texas
Commission on the Arts is
happy to provide funding to arts
organizations such as Cantare'
in support of the continuation of
quality arts education in
underserved areas of the State.

Texas House of Representatives.

Choir members achieve stellar musical performance
Members of the Cantare' Community Youth Choir recently achieved a stellar performance of "Miracle
on Bethlehem Street" as their 2005 Christmas musical. Jennifer Villarreal. Gabriella Reyna, Clarissa
Villarreal and Amanda Lopez played shepherds and townspeople in Cantare's fifth annual Christmas
musical "The show is the best I've seen yet," said Mr. Francisco G. Zarate, who attended the opening
night performance on Dec. 10.
