This letter is in reference to your
Dec. 26 editorial where you talk
about some of Starr County's
strengths and weaknesses.
I totally agree with your editorial
100 percent. Starr County does
have problems, but so does every
city and county in the United
States. I would really like to find a
place in the U.S. that does not have
a problem of some sort- a Utopia if
you will.
In the past year, I have attended
several economic development
schools, seminars, and confer-
ences. I have met many successful
economic developers that have told
me that the only way to promote a
community is to first identify the
strengths and weaknesses of that
community and then capitalize on
it.
I strongly agree with your
editorial in that we are not taking
full advantage of the tourist trade.
Tourism is an industry just like
agriculture, finance, service, oil
and gas, etc.
Many of us have probably visited
places like the riverwalk in San
Antonio, Sixth Street in Austin,
Strand Street in Galveston, or even
closer to Starr County- South Padre
Island. Tourism is important to all
of these places.
These are places similar to the
historical districts in Roma or
historical places in Rio Grande
City that have been cleaned up,
restored, landscaped, and then
turned into tourist shops, restau-
rants, museums, and office build-
ings. La Borde House is a prime
example of what could be done
with other historical buildings in
Starr County.
Recently, I toured the Fort
Ringgold Campus and discovered
that the famous Robert E. Lee
House will eventually crumble if
nothing is done to preserve it. I ask
the question. Does anyone in Starr
County care about preserving this
house9 I often wonder what tourists
think when they see this house.
Maybe the problem with us is that
we are too preoccupied with other
things and are just waiting for
someone else to take the lead
Recreation is another industry in
our county that has not been fully
developed. In Colorado, for exam-
ple, snow skiing, fishing, hunting,
and camping are a multi-million
dollar recreational industry.
As a matter of fact, recreation is
the leading industry in Colorado. I
often have asked myself, Why
doesn't someone take advantage of
Falcon Lake, one of Starr County's
major natural resources?
Well, guess what? Someone is
already doing it. Across from
Falcon Dam is Nuevo Guerrero
and a group of investors are
presently pummping a lot of money
into a resort project. This project,
according to the investors, will
eventually have condos, cabanas,
restaurants, a golf course, and boat
ramps.
Maybe the problem with us is
that we are too preoccupied with
other things and are just waiting
for someone else to take the lead.
It is quite obvious, that there are
some people that believe in this
area's potential otherwise, why are
they investing in such a project?
Economic development does not
only involve trying to attract
industry to move to our area, but
capitalizing on the strengths of an
area and correcting the weak-
nesses. If we have problems in
Starr County, let's solve them
rather than trying to dream up
excuses not to solve them.
It is a heck of a lot easier to
blame someone else for the pro-
blems that exist here, but, how
many of us are actually doing
something about it? There is a big
difference between saying that we
will do something about our pro-
blems and actually doing it.
1 hope that in 1986 everyone that
lives and works in Starr County
make it a New Year's resolution to
get involved in the many clubs and
organizations that work diligently
in trying to make Starr County a
better place. Starr County is a good
place, but, it could be better. Let's
try to work together in 1986.
Sincerely,
Rene Montalvo
