Chamber
office
open today
The Rio Grande City Cham-
ber of Commerce will open their
new office at 409 East Main to-
day, Thursday.
The office, according to Rich-
ard Ceballos, local chamber
president, will be open to the
public with an open house this
morning starting at 9 a.m.
Refreshments will be served
to those attending the opening of
the new office.
The open house will run
through the day.
Members of the chamber are
urged to attend the opening
ceremonies.
Trustee
election
Saturday
Voters in the Rio Grande City,
Roma and San Isidro Independ-
ent School districts will go to the
polls Saturday to elect trustees
to their respective board of di-
rectors.
In Rio Grande City making
the race this year for re-elec-
tion is Erika K, Rodriguez.
Mrs. Rodriguez, a veteran ofl2
years of school board service,
is being opposed by Raul Guer-
rero, a car salesman for Rami-
rez Ford Sales. Guerrero, a
member of the Rotary Club and
various other civic organiza-
tions is a native of Rio Grande
City and holds various business
interests.
Seeking a place on the board
unopposed is Dr. Ramiro Narro.
Local
district will
compete ■
Starr County Soli & Water
Conservation District will com-
pete for the top prizes in the
26th annual Goodyear Conser-
vation Awards Program, ac-
cording to John A. Shuford, Rio
Grande City, district chairman.
The district will pit Its 1972
record of conservation achieve-
ments against other districts in
the contest sponsored by the
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Com-
pany in cooperation with the Na-
tion Association of Conserva-
tion Districts (NACD). An Inde-
pendent judging committee will
select the first and second place
districts In the state.
Each first-place district wins
expense-paid, vacation-study
trips for Its outstanding coop-
erator and a member of the
governing board. Representa-
tives of 53 awards-winning con-
servation districts nationwide
will be guests of Goodyear on a
tour of outstanding resource de-
velopment projects.

Aissa Garza daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francisco Garza will be ready for that great
long-awaited picnic. Aissa who Is five years old today was out practicing her egg crush-
ing on her little playmate Snowwhlte. Aissa will be joined by thousands of children
throughout the nation in celebrating Easter Sunday which opens with a family gather-
ing at church. Parents are urged to supervise the egg hunts this year. Wildlife of-
ficials warn that the warm weather has brought out the 'six footers' more commonly

A mass meeting was held at
Rio Grande City on March 26th,
1972 for the purpose of organiz-
ing a political unit.
Motions were made and car-
ried to name the organization
"The Peoples Party". The fol-
lowing officers were elected:
President, Daniel VUlarreal;
Vice-President, Aristeo Klein;
Secretary, Humberto Munoz;
Treasurer, Tomas Arredondo.

candidates for the May 6 Dem-
ocratic Primary Election:

Chairman, Ruben Molina; Coun-

Board approves 64 housing
unit for Starr County...
The Starr County Housing
Authority has been notified that
the county has been tentatively
approved and selected by the
Department of Housing and Ur-
ban Development of San Antonio
to develop sixty-four public
housing units to be leased under
section 25, leased housing and
new construction.
This allocation of 6-1 units Is
dependent upon the housing au-
thority submission to HUD of a
feasibility analysis within ac-
ceptable over-all costs.
Members of the Starr County
Housing Authority are Dr. Gil -
berto Garza, Leonel Pena, Leo-
nel Garza and Noel Guerra.
Counsel for the group Is Alex
W. Gabert.
In making the announcement
Briscoe
Dolph Briscoe, gubernatorial
candidate from Uvalde in the
May Democratic primaries,
concluded his tour of the Val-
ley Saturday night with a re-
ception in McAllen.
During the course of the day,
which began for the candidate
at 8 a.m. in Harlingen, he made
stops in Mercedes, Weslaco,
Donna, Elsa and Edinburg be-
fore concluding in Mc^llen.

Monday morning that the group
had unanimously selected both
the Soutnwestern Development
Corporation of Houston and Gene
Hobart as planning consultant to
submit to HUD a feasibility an-
alysis plus the appropriate le-
gal documents to support Starr
County's application.
Next Monday Perry Rowan
Smith, counsel 'or the South-
western Development Corpora-
tion will accompany members
of the local housing authority to
view prospective sites for the
building of these housing units.
"We feel that these units will
be a welcome addition to our
county. There's no other county
with a housing shortage as is
Starr County," the board stated
in a joint statement.
