Mr. Bell offered the following resolution:
H. S. R. No. 244, In Memory of Oscar Calvin Smith.
Whereas, On February 22, 1948, Oscar Calvin Smith, father of
our esteemed colleague, Max C. Smith, was called to his Heavenly
Reward at San Marcos, Texas, where the family has long resided; and
Whereas, Oscar Calvin Smith was born at Waelder, Texas, De-
cember 25, 1876, the son of William S. and Savannah B. Smith,
pioneer contractor and ginner of that area; and
Whereas, Oscar Calvin Smith entered the cotton ginning business
as a youth with his father and spent his entire life in the ginning
and warehouse industry, being an organizer of the Texas Cotton
Ginners' Association and a long time director of same; and
Whereas, He served as City Commissioner of San Marcos from
1924 to 1941 and as Mayor of San Marcos in 1941 and 1942 and spent
a long and active Christian life as a civic leader in his area; and
Whereas, He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence C. Smith,
a daughter, Dr. Gwendolyn K. Smith of Illinois, and three sons, Cap-
tain Oscar Calvin Smith, Jr. of the United States Army, Edwin L.
Smith, and Max C. Smith, and grandchildren, Lamar and Duane
Smith of San Marcos; and
Whereas, His memory is revered by his community, and his kind-
ness in civic and benevolent work will remain forever in the minds
of those who loved him and the others to whom his friendship was
unexcelled; now therefore, be it
Resolved, by the House of Representatives, That the sympathy
of the Members of the 51st Legislature be extended to the family of
Oscar Calvin Smith, and that the Chief Clerk of the House of Repre-
sentatives be directed to send enrolled copies of this resolution to the
family and that a page be set aside in the Journal in his memory, and
when the House adjourns today, it do so in the memory of this noble
Texan.
