We will ."peak out, we will be heard,
Though all earth'9 system* crack.
We will not bate a single word.
Nor take a letter back.
We speak the tratli, and what care we
For hissing and for scorn.
While some faint gleainings we can see
Of freedom's coming morn?
Let liars fear, let cowards shrink.
Let traitors turn away.
Whatever we have dared to think
That dare we also say.

C W NOTES
On August21 last lion. Harnett
Gibbs mailed the following letter.
Dallas, Texas, Aug.21st 181*3.-
M. M. Crane, attorney general;
W B. Wortham, state treasurer
Austin, Texas. Dear Sirs:-As a
citizen, and in the interest of a
greater public knowledge, and on
indefinite information from a
democrat, I ask you to reply offi-
cially to the following questions:
1. In the recent billion dollar
congressional appropriation hill
was there granted to the state of
Texas, seventy-five thousand dol-
lars or any similar amount?
2. If the appropriation was al-
lowed, on what account was it?
3. Was it collected through state
officials, and if not. who repre-
sented the state of Texas, and on
i what terms?
4. Has any of the money been
! paid, and if o, how much thereof?
: Respectfully, Barxktt Gibbs.
To the above letter Hon. M.M.
i Crane, attorney general, answer-
ed courteously to the effect, that
he had not seen any contract, but
had heard casually that Governor
Culberson had made a contract j
with Janus 3. Hogg to collect j
ithe amount in question.
Mr. Gibbs then wrote to Gov-j
ernor Culberson for a copy of i
such contract Mr. Culberson!
replied at great length, stating j
that such a contract was madc.j

learned of the successful ruse

of grievances to make known

A vote was taken of the entire
regiment by companies to decide
the sentiment of the men in re-
gard to going to Cuba. It result-
ed in fovor of going to Cuba by
a slight majority. The vote was
another farce played upon the
the men, and in not one company
was it fairly taken. The name of
each man was called and he gave
his preference and it was placed
upon the book. In case of absent
ones who were on guard and other
duties they were all marked as :i
favor of going. This is how it
was obtained. If a correct vote
had been taken not over 100
privates would hav « been placed
upon the list a- wanting to go.

Mr 1>. T. Jennings, after six
weeks of suffering, after all had
been done that medical skill, lov-
ing hearts and tender hands could
do, with the heroic fortitude thai
has ever cbacterised his life, ht,
silently closed hia eyes in that
sleep from which no heart has
e\ r awakened, and the soul glad-
ly bid adieu to the treacheries of
earth and has gone to rest, and
live in the beautiful home across
the dark river, the bosom of the
eternal God. Mr. Jennings was
forty three years of age. vvas liorn

to our accomodating laundryman,
J. B. Jenning.-. Though having
lived here only a short while, he
had made many friend* who
