It is now over one hundred
days since we have had enough
ram more '.hail to lay the dust
for a few hours, and dry don't
begin to oxnress it. Not a bit
of wheat land is prepared
There i* nothing to do but to
haul our little bit of grain to
market and almost give it
away. Truly we are in a bad
condition.
The school begins to-day at
this place with Wirt Mann,
principal; Miss McDade; assis-
tant. Our trustees have shown
themselves to be cormorants,
inasmuch as they enrolled
about eighty-five pupils, about
twenty of whom were children
of renters who are not going to
remain iu the district. The
parents of some of these chil-
dren asked for transfer for
their children's part of the
school fund. They were met
with a refusal point blank, and
a statement volunteered that
they wauled a certain number
of months school iu this dis-
trict, and if they transferred
the funds of all the renters who
were moving out, including the
children of the pastor ill
charge of this circuit,
who is to be transfeired to
some other circuit, that they
would not have funds to run
the school the given time. This
decision lenves these poor relit
ers to go into other districts,
pay the tuition of their chil-
dren, and leave these land own-
ers the funds that a .'uagnani-
uioiis state government has set
apart to educate the poor as
well as the rich. Now, right
here comes in another feature
of the lease law, a law made to
raise funds for lie- education of
the children. The laud is tied
tip so 1.hat it cannot be bought
I y the average poor man. so he
lias to rent. He rents this year
iu thin district next year
in another, but the director
steps in and refuses to let him
have his children's money, or
what amounts to the same, re-
fuses to allow it transferred.
Thus this beautiful lease law
defeats its own object. It pre-
vents the poor man from own-
ing land and gives the monev
intended to educate his chil-
dren to the men who own the
land. Hut what are vou going
U> do about it f Well, there is
one thing that men who rent
must do when they enroll their
children, they must have an un-
derstanding with the trustees
that their children's money
shall be transferred if they
wish it. They must be more
careful for whom fliey vote.
They have allowed their party
fealfy to override their belter
sense. Thus we are in tho tolls
of corporations,
land rings and smooth-
politicians.
