THE NEW RAILROAD.
NEWS AND VIKW8 CONCKUNIVO
f
FROM VARIOUS SOUROKS.
IT
W c arc glad to find that con-
siderable interest is manifested
hy our citizens today in regard to
the now lted Itiver, Texas and
Southern Kv, which has been
chartered and is now surveying a
route through West Collin. The
(5ou litr has endeavored to keep
an eye on the movements of the
new road but must admit that
their maneovuers are so rapid as
it makes us feel like we are 011 a
very warm trail. Active opera-
tions arc already under way. The
l'joad is to enter the state at Willis
about ten miles west of Dcnison
a.nd propose to run through Guu-
ther's ranch and take in Dallas
and Ft Worth. This would cause
1 H-
tjje ti ne to run about ten miles
\yest of MwKinney and would hurt
our town very much, and the
expense of the survey is already
being incurred. The work
is actually in progress and
it is our honest opinion
that the track layer* will be at
work inside of sixty days. Sher-
man people are making every
effort to have the road enter their
city from Willis. A mass meet-
ing was held in Sherman Wedncs
day, presided over by Judge II.
O. Head, at which that city agreed
to furnish free a right of way
from Sherman west to Gunter's
ranch, and soliciting committees
are at work to securc the ncccs
sary inducements to secure the
wad.
Ioj our opinion the road could
mora ^easily come here than to
Sherman, and if Sherman can
afford to offer inducements we
surely can for Sherman has but
little to lose by another road
passing through the thinly settled
V w w •
country west of it while McKin
ney has everything at stake. If
weean't secure the now road we
should prepare to intersect it at
the nearest point.
Time is . precious and if we
would act now is the time to bo
gin negotiations.
The following opinious in re
gardtc the road and what
MoKinney should flo was collected
today by a Courier reporter:
Capt. J. L. Greer—The damage
to the bnsiness of McKinney by
the Frisco extension is greatly
exaggerated by many. The nuin
ber of farms increase every year
and of course the quantity of
produce and consumers increase.
The business will not be mater
ialiy hurt. McKinney wont know
the difference in a short time.
The country is ahead of the town
and if hlie don't get a move 011
herself she won't be worthy of
the country. Let the good work
go on.
Capt. Boyd—I dont think the
move will materially hurt Mc-
Kinney. The East Line will
eventually go through west Collin
which will be all she'll need. .
Judge Goodner—I think we
oujjht to build a cotton mill. I
don't think we could get the road
Dr. Foote.—I believ e the best
thing we could do would be to
encourage an extension of the
East Line to a connection with
the proposed road somewhere
near Celina.
J. L. White—Do all we can to
bring it to McKinney.
. Joe Barnes—1 suggest that we
take proper step to get I he road
from Willis here, and if we can
not I suggest that we tap the road
in West Collin with a line from
%
here.
W. B. Newsome—McKinney
should act and act promptly. If
the proposed road from Willis to
Ft Worth should pass through
west Collin McKinney will be
very materially injured in every
way and especially as a grain
market. I suggest that it would
be to our interest to get the road
here and if we can not to intersect
the lit.e in west Collin with a road
from here.
Messrs. W. T. Brook and Ed
Ncwsomelieard Mr. Newsome's
statement and heartily concurred.
Jesse Shain—Now is the oppor-
tune time for McKinney to strike.
From rumors that are affloat in
reference to railroads something
must be done and that imme-
diately. I suggest that the en
tire citizenship of the town and
county hold a mass meeting as
soon as possible for the purpose
of trying to induce the proposed
road f rom Will is to Ft. Worth to
come by McKinney. In the event

ifc should not accept our proposi
tion should we make one and
west of us thru' the flats, simply
cutting our commerce from that
section half in two. I suggest
that we take steps promptly to
intercept 1 ho road in west Collin
with a line from here.
J. G. Williams, the diversifycr
of Whites Grove—I think we
should get the road. If the road
should go through West Cellin
north and south it would bleed
McKinney to death.
J. P. Crouch—Call a mass
meeting of the citizen* of McKin
ney and Collin county at once and
see what can be done. McKinney
must act.
II. E. Singleton—I think Mc
Kinney should offer inducements
to bring the road here by all
means McKinney can effer lib
erl.y to get the road bccause it
will cut off a great amount of the
best territory that McKinney haa
to draw from if it ddu't come
here. I'll attend the mass meet-
ing. Call or;e.
