Notes

James McKay Lykes (1880-1943), member of the legendary shipping, cattle, and agricultural Floridian family, was founder, first President, and subsequent board chairman of the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. Lykes introduced the family’s cattle-shipping business to Texas by 1907. In 1909, he and his brother, Joseph Taliaferro Lykes, formed the predecessor to the company that would one day become the world’s largest steamship line. Incarnations of the company served as the United States shipping agents in WWI and WWII. Lykes resided in Houston, where he led an active civic and cultural life, from 1925 until his death in 1943.
