Superintendents of The Dallas Independent School District 1884 - 2010
Otto Fridia was the first African American to hold the position when he was named interim
superintendent for a year, until the Board of Trustees employed Marvin Edwards. Yvonne
Gonzales was both the first woman and the first Hispanic superintendent. Ten of the 23
superintendents (including interim/acting) were born in Texas. Dr. Michael Hinojosa was the
first foreign-born superintendent and also the only one to graduate from a Dallas school. Ten of
the superintendents were born in Texas, but none in Dallas.
Back to the original question: who are those buried at Oakland Cemetery? James Albert Brooks
is the only superintendent buried there. Unlike school board members, superintendents are not
always long term residents of Dallas. Twenty-one individuals have served as superintendent. Ten
superintendents were born in Texas, but none were born in Dallas. Eight superintendents died in
Dallas. They are buried at Greenwood (1), Restland (2), Oakland (1), Hillcrest (2), Grove Hill
(1), and Lincoln (1) cemeteries. Others buried in Dallas area cemeteries are Recompense
Stanberry, J. L. Long, Justin F. Kimball, N. R. Crozier, Julius Dorsey, W. T. White and Otto
Fridia.
This researcher endeavored to uncover the birth and death dates and places, burial location,
names of parents and spouses, and occupations of the Dallas superintendents. Basic primary and
secondary sources included census records, death certificates, obituaries, World War I draft
records, cemetery records, city directories, The Dallas Morning News Historic Newspaper
Online, Dallas Public Library Texas/Dallas History Department's clipping file, vital records
available through Ancestry, Rootsweb, and other online genealogical services. No doubt there
may be errors and omissions. Following the list of genealogical information on the
Superintendents of the Dallas Independent School District are selected sources and assorted
notes.
The Dallas Independent School District has photographs of all of its superintendents. They hang
in the hallway outside the Superintendent's Office at the School Administration Building. Three
of those photographs are included here by the courtesy of the school district's Communications
Department.
