Leighton Ewell Holt, Jr.
The extent or character of his service cannot be determined definitely from data now available. I
do know from family reminiscences that he entered the Confederate service shortly after the
outbreak of the War in 1861 and that he was in the service continually (except for a time when
he was a prisoner of the Union Army) until the close of the War in 1865. I recall stories he told
of his service under General Gano and General Sterling Price and of his capture while with
Morgan's Raiders.
This record can be verified in part by the attached letters, one from Harriet Smither, State
Archivist, Texas State Library, Austin, Texas and the other from Major General K. B. Bush,
Office of the Adjutant General, Department of the Army, Washington, D. C.
