A Glimpse Into Dallas County Elections - 1922
4 April 1922
MASS MEETING TO OPPOSE KLAN WILL BE HELD
TONIGHT
CITIZENS INDORSE PLANS OF LEADERS
GENERAL M. M. CRANE ISSUES STATEMENT ON OBJECTS OF
GATHERING.With enthusiastic endorsement of their anti-Ku
Klux Klan campaign being received all Sunday
and Monday in the form of commendatory
telephone calls, letters and hundreds of
additional signatures to the "law and order"
mass meeting call of the leaders of the
movement to discountenance "river-bottom
courtrooms" and clandestine applications of the
lash have completed their plans for Tuesday
night's meeting at the City Hall auditorium at 8
o'clock.
General M. M. Crane has been selected
chairman.
Sam P. Cochran, former Governor O. B.
Colquitt and Dr. J. B. Cranfill will deliver
addresses.
Not to Wear Masks.
"We want to impress upon all people
everywhere," General Crane said, "that this new
organization is a morally bound body rather
than a politically bound one. There is nothing
political about it, and it has not been undertaken
because of similar movements elsewhere. If
there are similar movements elsewhere, we have
not heard of them, and are not actuated by them.
"We simply realize that an intolerable situation
has arisen and we are going to form ourselves
into a strongly organized body to enforce the
laws of the State, the county and the city. And
we will not wear masks to do it."
"We know that we are in the right," Judge C. M.
Smithdeal, one of the committeemen, said. "Ifwe weren't morally sure of that fact before we
would know it now by the splendid response
that has come to our call. The list of names
signed to our petitions is an ever lengthening
one, and one that represents all classes of
citizens. Protestants, Catholics and Jews, many
of them among the leading citizens of our
community, appear there and the letters and
telephone calls that have come to our offices
following the announcement of our plans in
Sunday's Dallas News indorsing our move to
maintain and respect our laws, have shown us
that serious-minded citizens are with us."
Would Query Officials.
The proposal that a committee be named at
tonight's mass meeting to call at the county
courthouse and ask every officeholder as to his
affiliation or sympathies with the klan or similar
organizations is made in a letter sent to the
committee by Charles L. Edwards. The letter,
asking that his name be added to the list of those
who indorse the mass rational procedure on the
part of the City Commissioners in purging the
police force of its membership in this infamous
brotherhood of outlawry. The inquiry suggested
by The News may well begin with the head of
the police department, go through the police
force with a fine-tooth comb, then go entirely
through the list of employees in the Municipal
Building, ending with street workers and firing
of every man and woman affiliating with this
gang or in sympathy with it.34 Dallas Journal 2096
