About M. Lawrence Camp-the Diary Writer
Tresa Tatyrek
The diary writer, Marion Lawrence Camp was
born 14 Dec 1875 to James Thomas Camp and
Mary Phila Ann Cain in McMinnville, Warren
Co, Tennessee. He was the youngest of eight
children. After his father died in 1881, he,
several of his brothers, and his mother moved to
Dallas County. In an odd twist, the land
referred to in the diary where M L. Camp slept
in a barn on the Fourneaux land, was purchased
and developed as a residential community by L.
Bradley Camp. Until reading the diary in 2005,
Bradley Camp did not know that his grandfather
had traveled and slept there in 1897.
Lawrence Camp married Rose Bradley,
daughter of James and Margaret Higgins
Bradley in 1903. He worked in the Dallas
County Clerks office for several years where hefrequently reported items of interest to the
Dallas Morning News. He started working in
the office 1911-1912 and ended his career there
in 1922 when he ran for County Clerk and lost.
Below are articles that include his name and
some of his quotes. They are reprinted here to
illustrate the value of local newspapers in our
genealogical research.* They not only provide
information about the people we research, they
reveal the idiosyncrasies of the times in which
they lived.
