Lindley/Heisel Bible Library Research Project
The German Shoemaker and the Georgia Peach
A Research Project Using the Resources of the
Dallas Public Library
Barbara Dossett and Mary A. Johnson
Two Bibles recently were donated to the Dallas Public Library (DPL) Genealogy Section. They had been
purchased at estate sales and given to the library by the purchaser. The Bibles were placed in the storage area until
we decided to transcribe the records for publication in the DGSJournal. The name, Marie Heisel, was inscribed on
the cover of one Bible, but it did not contain any family information.
The other Bible, published ill 1833, was originally owned by John
Smith and sold to William Lindley. Along with Lindley family
- .records, the Bible and many of the cards, notes and other documents
found in the second Bible related to the family of Adam Heisel.
.. : After transcribing the records, we became curious about the
families mentioned in the Lindley/Heisel Bible. Why was the Bible
;..",Y sold in an estate sale only to end up on the shelves of the Dallas Public
q >Library? Why wasn't the Bible a treasured memento in the hands of
the Heisels' descendants? Who were these people? Where did they
s live? How did they make a living? Why did Adam Heisel leave
Germany, marry a woman from Georgia and move to Dallas'? What
happened to Adam Heisel, his wife Georgia and their descendants?
Rather than simply publish these Bible records in the DGSJournal, we decided to research the Heisel and
Lindley families using the vast resources of the Dallas Public Library. DPL was listed in Family Tree Magazine
(Cincinnati: F&W Publications) in its October 2002 issue as one of the top ten public libraries in the United States
for genealogical research, so we decided to test this claim. This article details our search methodology, provides
some of the records we found and gives clues to other records that may exist about the Heisels. Our goal was to
show how much research can be accomplished using only DPL reference materials found on the seventh floor
Texas/Dallas History & Archives Division and the eighth floor Genealogy Section.
With very few exceptions, the only Internet resources we used were those available at DPL. This did
include the databases available from ProQuest via the TexShare Library system,2 but it did not include such
subscription services as Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com, two of the more popular online genealogical websites.
We did not use these services simply because DPL does not have a subscription to either.
Following are the facts we obtained from the Lindley/Heisel Bible (all spelling and grammar preserved as
