World War I Draft Registrations
World War I Draft Registrations
Dallas County
The first draft registration for World War I was held on June 5, 1917 calling men between the ages of 21
and 30. A second registration was held on June 5, 1918 and then a supplemental draft on August 24,
1918 for men who had become 21 since the last draft. The third registration on September 12, 1918
provided for those men between 18 and 45.
The Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library has the draft registration cards for Texas. Dallas
County makes up nine rolls of microfilm. The registrations are arranged by the four registration districts
in the city and a separate listing for the rest of the county. Because World War I had three different draft
cards, for the three different draft calls in 1917 and 1918, the information varies greatly depending upon
the date. If a category is blank, then the information was not on that card. In a county like Dallas,
where there had been a great migratory influx at the turn of the century, some of these cards can be most
valuable. On one set of cards, the birthplace of the father is given. You will note even in this small
sampling the large number of countries and states represented as birthplace.
Another value of these records is that most of the cards have an exact date of birth, as most of the men in
this record were born before mandatory birth registration had begun. The cards are also one place where
a middle name may be found. One version of the card contained multiple boxes for race and
nationality. In this abstraction, an asterisk (*) appears in the Race or Citizenship column when more
than one box was checked by the registrant.
Due to space limitation, not all of the information on the cards is abstracted here. You will want to go to
the original record to search for your relative. These may be more legible than the information on the
microfilmed version.
Copies of the actual draft registration card can be ordered from National Archives and Records
Administration, Southeast Region, 1557 St. Joseph Avenue, East Point, GA 30344. When ordering, it is
important to provide as much information as possible, including the address of the registrant, especially
if the man registered in a city. They are filed alphabetically by state and by draft board (county and
district). Provide the full name of the person and their city, county and state at time of registration. For
certain cities, a street address or other specific location information is required. Cost is $10.00. A form
can be found on the Internet.
