The Ed C. Smith Funeral Home records deposited in the Genealogy Section of
the Dallas Public Library consist of registers starting in 1909 and extending to 1978.
From 1909 until 1926 these are in hard-cover binders and from 1927 until 1978 the
records are in file folders, but in both cases they are filed by year and then alphabetically
within the year. There are some cash books that date from 1884; however, they generally
give no genealogical or burial information.
Another record group that is helpful in establishing death dates is the Index to
Texas Deaths which is available from 1903 until 1993. The years 1903 through 1973 are
on eighteen rolls of microfilm; while the years 1964 through 1993 are on microfiche.
This index gives the name of the deceased person, the county of death, the date of death,
and the Texas death certificate number. Both the microfilm and microfiche sets are
available in the Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library.
The Dallas Genealogical Society has published four volumes in the series, Dallas
County, Texas Genealogical Data from Early Cemeteries. The volumes already
published inventory more than one hundred of the two hundred plus cemeteries in Dallas
County. Many of the smaller cemeteries have either no listings or incomplete listings of
burials and the only record is on the grave stones. It is particularly important that these
be recorded and published since stones disappear through erosion, accident, and
vandalism. Large perpetual-care cemeteries have been mentioned with date of first burial
and office addresses given; these cemeteries keep records which are generally available1996 DGS Journal
