W ell, we surely had a nice rain yesterday. About 2 inches, but I think someone said it did
W not rain in Marlin. We surely did need it. I tell you things had begun to look serious
with me as many as we have to feed ... My chickens are fine. We had a big dish of fried
chicken Sunday. I also have 26 little turkeys. This has been a wonderful spring for chickens
and turkeys, being dry ... Ticky and some of the boys are going fishing tonight. Wallace
wanted to go but I did not let him. It is damp and cold and I was afraid it would give him the
sore throat. --- Letter dated April 17, 1936, from Jennie Rankin Ward to her son, Jake.
Daddy loved the country. He loved to fish and hunt. He went fishing on Big Creek with his
friend, Bill He went raccoon hunting with his brother, Ticky. But Daddy wasn't really much
of a hunter. He hated to kill anything. His brother called him the "stump hunter" because
Daddy was always hunting around for a stump to sit on instead of something to shoot.
One of my earliest memories is of a visit to Granddaddy Ward's house. I must have been
about five years old. Granddaddy's house didn't have indoor plumbing so I had to take a bath
in the back yard. I remember sitting in a tub of water out behind the house. I didn't like being
out there, either. I was a city girl and that was my first experience with bathing outdoors.
There were red wasps flying around and they scared me. I didn't like visiting Granddaddy's
house. I wanted to go home to my bathtub in my house.199613 DGS Journal
