W e are looking for you all Labor Day. You better hurry before all the chickens are gone.
S You know how Rosie eats chicken. Had two for dinner today. We thought of you all,
but that did not help your plate to the chicken, did it! Letter dated August 5, 1934, from
Jennie Rankin Ward to her son, Jake.
Whenever the Wards were together, there was always good food. I still remember the
Christmas Eve get-togethers at our house in Dallas. We gathered on Christmas Eve because
Uncle Neilion and Aunt Bode always came in from Shreveport for a Christmas Eve dance in
Ft. Worth. So, all of the Ward brothers and sisters who could showed up at our house on the
afternoon of Christmas Eve and Daddy would grill hamburgers and sausage outdoors. There
was always plenty of food. Daddy never wanted anyone to leave his house hungry.
Even today when the Wards get together, there is always food. Every other year we all try to
meet for the Reagan Reunion. One group gets adjoining rooms and on Friday night we all go
there to eat. There are two or three kinds of meat, salads, vegetables, bread, and iced tea. And
desserts, there are always four or five desserts. The Wards are famous for their "sweet tooth."
The food is put out on the dressers in the rooms, and we eat, sitting on chairs, on the beds,
some even standing to eat. I can't imagine being together without eating.199611 DGS Journal
