A mild winter,
itious
insect pests,
.te combined to bring about this
result In New England, 4h® spring
is three weeks earlier than usual, the
hay crop one-third above the average,
* ' " *" " are in full blossom,
rye was
of April, 20 days earlier
, and grass is 2 1-2 feet
sections. The Hew
¡h crop will be good and
crop enormous. Pennsyl-
not known such a promis^ :
pnng for 20 ynars; but Dela-
bas suffered considerably from
as has also Virginia, though
the rye and wheat look very well
In West Virginia. North Caro-
lina, Georgia and Alabama, the
average of crops is larger and con-
dition better than last year, and in
some sections better than since tfce
opening gf the war. The same is
true of the Western States. Ohio
will probably yield 30,000,000
bushels of wheat. Indiana is ex-
pected to do 15 per cent, better
than any year since 1853, and
Illinois nearly as well. The reports
from Iowa, Wisconsin Michigan and
other States are encouraging, the
res in Kansas, which will
836,023 more seres this year
last. The; enormous emiga-
tion to that State is no doubt one of
the causes of this increase. No
ppers are yet reported in
"o,—in fact, unless frosts and
and cyclones visit the country, the
Thanksgiving of 1878 wiÚ be
e in our annals.
'•The first goo for Thockhoktok" was
in recently telegraphed from Wise county,
& now comes answering back from
Throckmorton's own district the first
gun for Hubbard, from Palo Pinto
county, adjoining Parker, which may
also speak in the same tone. At a large
mass meeting, on the eighth inst., of the
Democracy of Pulo Pinto county, they
declared for Hcbbabd as their first
choice for Governor, and a liberty pole
seventy-five ieet in altitude was raised,
and a Hubbard flag flung to the balmy
bracze. There is a charm in the open-
ing of the canvass, as animating as hope-
ful of the grand triumphs of the true
Democracy. The first gun echoed by
the Gazette came from the noble De-
mocracy of Mclennan county, in which
they raised the old standard and buckled
on the armor for upholding and vindi-
cating it against every ad versary, whether
open or disguised, and this will be tbe
battle cry of the Gazsttb to the Ides of
November.

govern- 'great degree of certainty by a liber-
al dressing of good and well decom-
posed manure to the land, which
should be well plowed in as early in
the spring as possible. As soon as
the weeds have come up,
should be cross plowed as fine as
possible with a ; Swivle plow; the
land should then be harrowed am
rolled, when it will be ready for the
seed. |
The seed should be soaked, in
warm water twenty-four hours pre-
vious to planting, and sunned a short
time to dry the surface moisture,
that the seed may not clog in the

acre is more than enoogkif judicious-
ly planted. Too tluck sowing re-
sults in very unnecessary and ex-
pensive thinning; or, if neglected
in a small growth of roots, expen-
sive to harvest and to handle. The
seed may be planted from early in
May to the 10th June. Our prac-
tice is to plant in straight rows
twenty-two inches apart in the row.
The after cultivation of the carrot
should be always prompt; "hoe the
ground and not the weeds," shoult [
be the motto.. The horse hoe can be
used in the cultivation of the carrot
to a very considerable extent, ant
our cultivation is very like that giv-
en the mangold. English turnips
can be sowed between the rows with
the seed sower, by the 20 of July,
without injury to the carrot, an ~
will add materially to the product of
the land.—O. B. Had wen.
